The Hazleton Area saw its first Paramedic Unit, Medic 4, enter into service on July 1, 1982. During the first year the Paramedics responded to approximately 700 calls. Medic 4 and medic 304 responded to approximately 95000 calls in its 19 years of existence. It had saved the lives of many residents and visitors to the Hazleton Area.
Medic 4's principle coverage area was approximately 200 square miles. The area is primarily rural and includes parts of Luzerne, Schuylkill and Carbon Counties in Pennsylvania. The Unit was headquartered at the Department of Emergency Services at Hazleton General Hospital, a member of the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance, along with Hazleton St. Joseph's Medical Center.
The Paramedic Unit was staffed by highly trained Pre-Hospital RN's, Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians. The Staff maintained numerous certifications. The following are a few:
CPR- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support
PALS- Pediatric Advanced Life Support
BTLS - Basic Trauma Life Support
PHTLS - Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support
CEN - Certified Emergency Nurse
The majority of the calls that Medic 4 responded to are medical emergencies. When patients with multiple trauma are encountered they are usually flown to one of the regional trauma centers. Medic 4 utilizes one of the following flight services:
Medevac - Lehigh Valley Hospital - Allentown, Pa.
Life Lion - Hershey Medical Center - Hershey, Pa.
