  • Patients as Victims: Sexual Abuse in Psychotherapy and Counseling. Derek Jehu. 1994 Wiley. ISBN 0-471-94398-3. Comprehensively reviews the topics of ethics, epidemiology, abusive therapists, victimized patients vulnerability, consequences of abuse, intervention with victims, as well as regulation and prevention.
  • Practical Tools for the Treatment of Childhood Sexual Abuse  by Adena Bank Lees,2000. $20 USA. This 93 page manual consists of assessment tools, handouts, and guidelines regarding the treatment of children, adolescents and adults who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. All pages are reproducible.

  • Reach for the Rainbow: Advanced Healing for Survivors of Sexual Abuse. Lynne D. Finney. 1990 Perigee Books. ISBN 0-399-51745-6 $16.95 Can. Written by a therapist/survivor, book presents survivors concerns and healing techniques in a reassuring style. Question and answer format. Covers many issues, including cult abuse, mpd, flashbacks, suicidal thoughts, filing suit, qualifications to look for in a therapist, and some self-help techniques.

  • Recovered Memories Of Abuse, Assessment, Therapy, Forensics. Kenneth S. Pope and Laura S. Brown, published by and available from the American Psychological Association. M. Landsberg says it "is a well-researched resource for therapists and lawyers. Calmly and clearly, it analyzes and debunks some of the wilder claims in the "memory wars," while offering guidelines for responsible treatment of incest survivors".

  • Right to Innocence, The: Beverly Engel, M.F.C.C., 1994. ISBN: 0-8041-0585-5. $4.95 USA. One survivor says of this book: "This book was given to me by my therapist. It took me one whole year of carrying it around in my purse before I read it. After reading the first few pages I knew for the first time that my secret was a huge but real problem and there was hope."
  • Ritual Abuse: What it is, why it happens, how to help. Margaret Smith. 1993 Harper Collins. ISBN 0-06-250214-X $16.75 Can. Written by a survivor and researcher of ritual abuse, in a caring and comprehensive manner.

  • A Safe Place: A glimpse into the private world and complex relationship of patient and therapist. Leston Havens. Ballantine. 1989 ISBN 0-345-37060-0. Dr. Havens takes readers into the mind of the therapist as he does his careful work.
  • Secret Survivors: Uncovering Incest and Its Aftereffects in Women. Sue Blume. 1991 $4.79, 321p. Reprint edition. Ballantine Books; ISBN: 0345369793.
  • Sex in the Forbidden Zone: When Men in Power Betray Women's Trust. Peter Rutter. Fawcett. 1989 ISBN 0-449-14727-4 $6.99 Can. This book addresses the issue of "what motivates men in power/trust to give up their professional oaths and protective roles to make the fantasy of forbidden sex a reality? And why do women, who may have no sexual interest in these men, often say yes - compromising themselves and their other intimate relationships?" The book also discusses strategies for women to reinforce the boundaries against invasion. Personally, I felt this book, written from more of a technical standpoint, could have benefited from more empathy with the victim.
  • Sex in the Therapy Hour: A Case of Professional Incest. Carolyn M. Bates and Annette M. Brodsky. 1989 Guilford Press. ISBN 0-89862-726-6 $19.95 US. Carolyn Bates examines here experience of sexual intimacy with her therapist. Annette Brodsky, the expert witness in Carolyn's subsequent malpractice suit, evaluates the case and explores the ramifications of such interactions. Although this book was written based on the US legal system, I found it excellent reading.
  • Sexual Dilemmas for the Helping Professional. Jerry Edelwich and Archie Brodsky. 1991 Brunner/Mazel. ISBN 0-87630-627-X $26.50 Can. A dispassionate look at seduction, power, opportunity, self-interest, morality, personal regard, transference, and liabilities.
  • Sexual Intimacy Between Therapists and Patients. Kenneth S Pope and Jacqueline C. Bouhoustos. Praeger. 1986 ISBN 0-275-92253-1 $14.95 US. This book focuses on therapist-patient sexual involvement, and includes case studies illustrating ten types of therapist-patient sexual relationships. Discusses malpractice, licensing and ethics issues with respect to psychotherapists.
  • Strong at the Broken Places: Overcoming the Trauma of Childhood Abuse. Linda T. Sanford. Avon. 1990 ISBN 0-380-71535-X $5.99 Can. Twenty former victims of family violence and molestation, who went on to lead successful and productive lives, were interviewed for the substance of this book. Book examines issues of self-image, body image, intimacy, work and spirituality, as well as dispelling the myth of adult survivors as "damaged goods".

  • The Survivor: Anatomy of Life in the Death Camps. Terrence Des Pres. 1976 Pocket Books. ISBN 0-671-83479-7 (paperback. This book I personally recommend to anyone who wants to read about the human capacity to survive despite an enduring hostile environment. I am confident that you, as an abuse survivor, will in some way, relate to the process.
  • Somebody Somewhere: Breaking Free from the World of Autism. Donna Williams. 1994 Doubleday Canada. ISBN 0-385-255500-4 $15.95 Can. A sequel to Nobody Nowhere. (see listing).

 

  • Society & Sex Offenders by Lawrence Ray Mullen, LMSW-ACD.  ISBN 1-885373-14-7, 1999 $16.95 USA  A prison therapist for sex offenders explores our attitudes and definitions, laws and treatment options, prognoses and community concerns. Mullen differentiates the types of offenders and discusses what other groups are doing in communities around the country. Not only for those Sexually Abused, but shows how Combat PTSD can run parallel to Sex Abuse. Goes over stages of recovery, Captivity, Terror, Domestic Abuse, Child Abuse and much more.

  • Thou Shalt Not Be Aware: Society's Betrayal of the Child. Alice Miller. 1992 Meridian/Penguin. ISBN 0-452-00929-4 $14.99 Can. The roots of victimization of the child are looked at. Freud's theory of "infantile sexuality" is refuted, and the "brutal reality behind children's "fantasies" in case histories, works of literature, dreams, and the lives of such people as Kafka, Virginia Woolf, Flaubert, and Beckett" are revealed.

  • The Untouched Key: Tracing Childhood Trauma in Creativity and Destructiveness. Alice Miller. Anchor/Doubleday. 1990 ISBN 0-385-26764-9 $12.95 Can. Looks at the question of why some troubled children turn out to be wonderfully creative and others turn their sufferings back against the world.

  • Wounded Heart, The: Hope for Adult Victims of Childhood Sexual Abuse. by Dr. Dan Allender. ISBN 0-89109-289-7. 1990 $20.00 Canadian. Very well done. Covers all the bases. Comes with an excellent work book that is an excellent self-help or group workbook. Contains questions particular to gender of victim. These books are written from a biblical perspective, Christians would find it very useful to combine their spirituality with the healing process.
