Vaastav

Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Namrata Shirodhkar, Monish Behl, Ashish Vidyarthi, Mohan Joshi, Reema Lagoo
Director: Mahesh Manjrekar
Music: Jatin-Lalit
Rating: *

Mahesh Manjrekar's Vaastav is about gangsters more like Satya. After the success of Satya people are after the underworld subject. However the film is not very routine. It has its moments of emotions and pains and above all we see Sanjay Dutt in great form -- he has given an excellent performance.

The story revolves around Raghu (Sanjay Dutt). Raghu is not inclined towards studies like his elder brother Vijay (Mohnish Behl), and instead he opens a pav-bhaji stall on the street with his friend Dedfutia (Sanjay Narvekar).

Faced with an irritating customer, while saving his own stall and life, Raghu commits his first murder. The dead person was from one of the goons' family. Soon Raghu and his friends are under the shelter of the rival gang leader Vitthal Kanya (Ashish Vidyarthi). Raghu then finds himself as a killing machine who kills businessmen and builders. He also starts working for the corrupt politician Babbanrao Kaddam (Mohan Joshi). In due course he marries Sonu (Namrata Shirodkar), a prostitute. He also gets addicted to alcohol and cocaine. He helps get a job for his brother without his knowledge.

The ending of the film reminds one of the old classic Mother India, however it is not as touching.

Sanjay Dutt has given a splendid performance in all the shades of his character. Namrata Shirodkar has not got much footage. Reema Lagoo as Raghu's mother has given a commendable performance. The surprise one is the performance by Sanjay Narvekar who played the role of Dedfutia.

Direction is good but there is room for improvement. The film does have some bad language and overall the film could have been much more better with proper screenplay.
