Sooryavansham

What happens when you are all prepared to see another one of those terrible movies and eventually get to see a real nice one? You are surprisingly happy and that is what happened to me when I went to see 'Sooryavansham'. The story is about a father who is too unjust to his son and he does not agree to anything he does. The son, on the other hand, frantically tries to win the favour of his father.

Thakur Bhanupratap Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) is a highly honourable man whose one word can shake many a people out in the community. All are indebted by the good done to them by him but he finds no satisfaction in his youngest son Hira (Amitabh Bachchan). He treats him worst than a servant.M

Bhanupratap invites the enmity of another Thakur, Deshraj Singh (Mukesh Rishi) when he sends him to jail on the attempt of raping a maid. Deshraj swears enmity and keeps that for his future reference when he can hit back. Here again, Bhanupratap becomes kind of a semi-god in the eyes of the public.

Hira's younger sister is to get married to a lawyer so some guests arrive at their bungalow. The guests consist of Radha, (debutant Soundarya) Retd. Major Ranjit Singh (Kader Khan), the groom and his parents. Hira is mistaken for a servant and he with Hira's friend Dharmendra (Anupam Kher) are treated very badly. Hira is a humble guy who forgets and forgives people easily. He is one of those people who believe in everyone and get hurt on the bargain. Dharmendra or Mindra is his best friend and he finds solace in him.

Radha realises her mistake when she comes to know of Hira's true identity. She finds herself attracted towards him and so in the flash back, Mindra tells her about Hira's past life. Hira was in love with a girl called Gauri who had been adopted by Bhanupratap Singh. This love developed right since his childhood. Once, when Gauri is beaten by the teacher for not completing her homework, Hira takes out the rage by hitting the teacher back. From then on, he stops going to school and Gauri is sent to a hostel. But Hira's love blooms and coming to know of this, the Thakur decides to get them married. But Gauri, who is well educated and a 'modern girl' cannot marry an illiterate village dweller. So she insults him but as the humble man he is, he agrees not to marry. This denial on his part is wrongly taken by Bhanupratap and he blames Hira for everything. Hira loses all his father's approval.

This narration leaves Radha all the more in love with Hira and after a little bit of hoopla he too agrees. Radha's mom is not too pleased of this match and so tries to get her married in a huff to Deshraj's son Arjun (Imran Khan). Hira takes away Radha on her wedding day and this displeases the old man all the more. He throws them from his home and they start a new life of their own. Hira gets himself a job as a coolie in a bus.

Radha comes to know of this and though angry, encourages him to buy a bus of his own. So they buy a dilapidated bus with the money given by Ranjit Singh. Now Radha, Hira, Mindra and their Uncle Ranjit Singh set the bus on road. On the other hand, Radha catches with her IAS studies. Hira slowly becomes the owner of a fleet of buses, companies and many more things. He is educated and his wife returns as the new Collector of their district.

This seems to be the turning point in their lives because being the Collector, Radha faces Bhanupratap and the ice between them thrawts a bit. The ice keeps melting when he meets his grand son who bears his name. This little Thakur brings in a transformation in the man as he is the only son of his Sooryavansham clan.

Now is the time for Deshraj to take his revenge. He puts poison in Bhanupratap's 'kheer', which his grandson had so lovingly given to him. His wife finds out about his 'new friend' and compels him for a truce with Hira. But Hira is blamed for the poison mixed in his dish. But all's well when the end's well. So after much fist-fights and bashings later, Hira is accepted in the family.

This is another one of those movies of Amitabh Bachchan where his acting prowess comes in the forefront. He is in his former self in this film and no traces of anything unwanted is found. As happens in all Amitabh Bachchan movies, there is no scope for anyone else to have his say. Both the characters are very well played by him and there are scenes where one feels like getting up and applauding his hard-work.

Sooryavansham

The songs are 'okay' but Amitabh's performance throws everything in the background. Another thing of mention is the cinematography. The cinematographer has done a good job and after Amitabh's performance, that's the only thing which catches the attention. Now is the time to realise that Amitabh simply could not have been the favourite of everyone just for nothing. His acting is the highlight of the movie. In all, another one of those power-packed roles from the Big B. Go enjoy it!

Songs of Sooryavansham

2. Peepal Ke Patwa Pe Likh De (Vipin Sachdev & Alka Yagnik)
3. Chori Se Chori Se (Sonu Nigam)
