RAJU CHACHA Cast: Rishi Kapoor, Kajol, Ajay Devgan and Johnny Lever Director: Anil Devgan Music: Jatin-Lalit Rating: * * * |
It is said that Ajay Devgan has spent an exorbitant amount on Raju Chacha, mostly by making the film on a very lavish scale -- expensive sets, special effects, promotion -- thus creating high expectations. But the film is not up to the mark. The film needs a lot of trimming and many situations are not ably handled by debutant director Anil Devgan. The film is a combo of Hollywood hits The Sound of Music and Home Alone. Businessman Siddhant Rai (Rishi Kapoor) cannot handle his business as well as his three motherless spoilt brat kids -- Rohit (Harsh Luniya), Rahul (Kinshuk Vaidya) and Rani (Sakshi Sen). The kids harass all the governess that are appointed, so that they all run away. The latest governess is an orphan Anna (Kajol). The kids play all the possible pranks on her also but she gives an equal answer to all of them. Finally after a little bit of more drama, the kids accept Anna as her elder sister. Now enters a petty thief Shekhar (Ajay Devgan) with his friend Jadoo (Jhonny Lever) to win Anna's heart. He tells false stories about Anna and him knowing each other from childhood and so on. Anna does start loving Shekhar but things take a turn when Shekhar's reality is disclosed. A heartbroken Anna returns back to the orphanage. Siddhnat Rai is killed by the villains (Govind Namdeo and his men) who are out to grab his property. There comes Raju Chahcha, Siddhant Rai's lost brother, to save the kids. Everything ends well in this fairy tale. The first half looks like a fairy tale with the colourful castle and special effects. The film is good when the kids are there. However, the romance between Anna and Shekhar looks out of place in the film. Ajay Devgan is good but not at his best. He looks very weak and tired as he has lost weight. Kajol is also not at her best though she is good in what is her forte -- emotion. The kids are very cute and adorable. Seeing Rishi Kapoor is a pleasant surprise. Music is average and the direction is jerky at places. The film could have done better if it had been trimmed a lot.
