Gaurav Kapoor (Sanjay Kapoor) , is the son of industrialist Madanlal Kapoor (Saeed Jaffrey) and Geeta Kapoor (Farida Jalal). A dynamic personality, he is sophisticated, cultured and a workaholic. He has a younger sister Roshni (Dimple Gosh), whom he loves very much. One day Gaurav meets Shweta Sharma (Madhuri Dixit), a beautiful, bubbly teenager who is his sister's best friend and falls in love with her at first sight. As days pass by, the love grows and so grows his longing for her. He thinks about her whenever he is alone. He dreams of her, yet he keeps his thoughts and dreams to himself. He does not want to share it with anyone since he is an introvert.He learns that she wants to be a singer and he instructs the famous music teacher (Bob Bramhabhatt) to teach her, he promotes her career, he sends her
beautiful yellow flowers on every occasion but never comes in the open. Shweta waits for her flower man to come so that she could see him even if it was just once and thank him for everything he has done for her. Gaurav is lost in his world of love . Love for Shweta. Shweta does not have parents but a loving brother (Farooq Shaikh). One day Gaurav is attacked by a group of street fighters (Shiva). They would have killed him if Rohit Malhotra (Akshaye Khanna) would not come in time and saved him. Gaurav is very grateful to him and learns that Rohit comes from a very poor background. Yet he was full of life. He has only his widow mother (Sulabha Arya) back in village, who has been waiting for the day her son would get a Job and earn in the big city. A bond of friendship springs up between the two , A friendship which no matter what happens would ever break and with time passing by grow more stronger. At last Rohit gets a family he used to long for and a friend who is as good as a brother to him. There is Dr. Goel (Tej Sapru) who again is a very good friend of Madanlal and a well wisher of the family. He brings the marriage proposal of his good friend Kewal Singh Dhillon's son Viren (Aswin Kaushal) who is also a Doctor, for Roshni. Roshni and Viren are married with blessings of every one. One day Shweta meets Rohit and Rohit falls head over heels in love with her. Shweta's heart also misses a beat when she meets this handsome dashing young man. Rohit woos her Shweta cannot hold it back any longer. Both fall in love. Rohit gores mad with joy at last he has got his lady love. One day comes when both the friends learn about the cruel twist of destiny that they are in love with the same girl. Both want to sacrifice their love for sake of each other for friendship is stronger than love. Who does the sacrifice ?? What is the fate of these two friends who are now rivals in love ?
