MAST

Cast: Aftaab, Urmila Matondkar
Director: Ramgopal Varma
Music: Sandeep Chowta
Rating: * *

Ram Gopal Verma's Mast comes after the super success of Satya. Like in his flop film Daud, Verma gave more attention to the lavishness and style of the film rather than the story and the screenplay. The result is not good like Rangeela and Satya. The story of the film is inspired by Verma's obsession for film actress Sridevi in his early days.

It is a story about collegian Kitu (Aftab Shivdasani) who has an absolute obsession for the film actress Malaika (Urmila Matondkar). His obsession is so much that he always dreams of Malaika and ignores his studies. The result is that he fails. He does not even know that his classmate Nisha (Antra Malli) loves him.

Disgusted, Kitu leaves his house in Pune and comes to Mumbai in search of his dream girl. He takes shelter in Usmanbhai's (Neeraj Vohra) hotel which is near Malaika's house. From this hotel Kitu gets to see Malaika and also comes to know that she is helpless in front of her uncle (Govind Namdeo). Kitu elopes with Malaika and both fall in love with each other. Then some drama and everything ends well.

Of the cast Urmila looks gorgeous but has nothing new to give in terms of performance. Aftab looks good but needs to improve a lot. Antra Malli is good. The girl shoes confidence. The highlight of the film is excellent choreography and some good numbers like Ruki Ruki.. and the title song. The first half of the film is a fantasy. The second half is a let down. Technically the film is brilliant, but the director should have paid more attention to the screenplay.
