MAHARAJA

Cast: Govinda, Manisha Koirala, Shakti Kapoor, Raj Babbar, Salim Ghose & Aruna Irani
Direction: Anil Sharma
Rating: *

Director Anil Sharma's Maharaja has given the audience possibly the most senseless story presented in a very poor manner. If anyone wishes to see the film, for sure he has to leave his brain behind -- maybe then you might enjoy a bit.

Some miracles happen and the prince Kohinoor is born in the palace with amazing powers of hypnotising wild animals. In the palace there is an evil minister Ranbir Singh (Salim Ghose) who slaughters the whole ruling family. However the prince is saved by Amina Bai (Aruna Irani) who sacrifices her own son for the sake of the prince.

Kohinoor grows as Maharaja (Govinda) in the forests of the Himalayas. His best friends are a monkey and an eagle. Shaili (Manisha Koirala) is a TV reporter who carries some unique items for entertainment purpose. She along with her assistant BPL Oye (Shakti Kapoor) on knowing about Maharaja come to take his interview.

Shaili meets Maharaja not knowing he is the same person for whom she has come. Maharaja falls in love with Shaili. When Shaili knows the identity of Maharaja, she pretends that she also is in love with him and gets him to the city as an item of entertainment. When Maharaja comes to know about this, he leaves Shaili.

On the other hand Amina Bai's second son Ali (Raj Babbar) reminds Maharaja of the past and gets him to the palace to free the kingdom from the clutches of Ranbir Singh. Later Shaili also realises her mistake and comes back to Maharaja. But now Maharaja does not accept her. And finally the heroine gets the hero, and with some action scenes the true heir gets his rights.

A very exhausting film. Of the star cast Govinda plays his part well. It seems Manisha was not involved into the role she played. All the other stars played their part according to the demand of the script. The director has failed miserably in making the film watchable.
