Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, Sana Saeed, Farida Jalal, Reema, Johnny Lever, Salman Khan & Anupam Kher
Direction/Story: Karan Johar
Producer: Yash Johar
Rating: * * * *

This is the first film this year which is excellent in all fields and it has all the ingredients of commercial cinema to make it a super hit. With this film director Karan Johar has also joined the list of young, hit and good directors.

The film is a love triangle but made taking into consideration the younger generation and still maintaining the touch and glory of Indian culture. Karan has handled extremely well most of the complicated and sensitive scenes. The film has shades of Dil To Pagal Hai, Sleepless in Seattle and Chandni. Above all, Karan also got good support from all his leading stars through their excellent performances.

The first half of the film is too youthful. Tomboyish Anjali (Kajol) and Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) are very good college friends. They fight, dance and play together. Then enters Tina (Rani Mukherjee), the principal's daughter. Rahul falls for feminine Tina and Anjali loses her heart to Rahul of which Rahul is not aware of it. When Anjali comes to know about Tina and Rahul, she leaves the college and goes far from them. Tina admires Anjali's sacrifice. Tina and Rahul get married.

Tina dies after giving birth to a baby girl whom she names Anjali (Sana Saeed). In her eighth letter to her daughter which has to be given to Anjali on her eight birthday, Tina asks her daughter to reunite Rahul and his college mate Sr. Anjali.

Jr. Anjali, her grandmother (Farida Jalal) and Tina's father (Anupam Kher) make plans to reunite Rahul and Sr. Anjali only to realise that Anjali had just got engaged to Aman (Salman Khan). Now Anjali is caught between Rahul and Aman. And the climax is how Jr. Anjali reunites both Rahul and Sr. Anjali and how Salman steps out of their life.

The performances of all the lead stars are A-grade. Shah Rukh has given a restrained performance. Rani Mukherjee also impresses in her short role. She has proved that given the role and chance she can act ably. But it is Kajol again who steals the show. She is just fabulous. She just gets involved into the character of Anjali whether she is tomboyish, or as a broken-hearted lover or as a mature woman. She is one of the finest actress Indian cinema has recently. And secondly it is Salman who in his special appearance has overshadowed Shah Rukh Khan. Salman is too good in emotional, light mooded and dance scenes. Jatin Lalit's music is also good especially the title song and Ladki Badi Anjani.... Though the film is long but all the minor flaws of the film are overshadowed by the wonderful overall impact very tenderly handled by Karan Johar.
