KHOOBSURAT

Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Urmila Matondkar
Director: Sanjay Chhel
Music: Jatin-Lalit
Rating: * *

Khoobsurat is the directorial debut film of dialogue writer and theatre personality Sanjay Chhel. This is inspired by films like Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Bawarchi and Amol Palekar's Thooda Sa Roomani Ho Jaye.

Sanju (Sanjay Dutt) wants to rob industrialist Chowdhary's family but has a clean heart. He enters the family as a far-off NRI relative. The family consists of grandparents (Anjaan Srivastav and Farida Jalal), Dilip (Om Puri), and his two brothers (Ashok Saraf and Jatin Kanakia), their wives (Himani Shivpuri and Supriya Sachin). Then there is Shivani (Urmila Matondkar) who is Dilip's daughter. Shivani is a very simple girl and so is rejected by all the boys who come to see her.

When Sanju comes in their house, he starts solving everyone's problems. He also helps in making Shivani realise that she is beautiful and one has to feel this from the heart. In this process Shivani falls in love with Sanju, but now the problem is Sanju's reality. Everything ends well.

The story is not tight and the screenplay is poor. Of course there are some light moments in the film which are good. Sanjay Dutt is good. Urmilla Matondkar looks beautiful but she needs to improve on her acting. The only thing she does is make faces. It is sad to see an actor like Om Puri in this type of non-substantial role. Paresh Rawal's (as a gangster Jogia to whom Sanju has to return huge amount of money) one liners are good. Jatin Lalit's music is melodious especially songs like Khoobsurat Ho... and Ghoongat Mein Chand.
