JIS DESH MEIN GANGA REHTA HAI Cast: Govinda, Sonali Bendre, Rinke Khanna, Milind Gunaji, Shakti Kapoor, Himani Shivpuri, Reema Lagoo, Sivaji Sattam Director: Mahesh Manjreka Rating: * |
Mahesh Manjrekar's Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hain is inspired by Dada Kondke's Marathi film Ekta Jeev Sadashiv. Ganga (Govinda) is a village simpleton and happy-go-lucky person. He is very happy with his parents (Shivaji Satnam and Reema Lagoo). He romances with village girl Savari (Sonali Bendre). But all hell breaks loose when Ganga comes to know that his parents in the village are his foster parents and his real parents (Shakti Kapoor and Himani Shivpuri) are in the city and now they want their son back. So the simpleton goes to the city and is very much surprised by the lifestyle of the city. He is disliked by his brother and sister-in-law (Milind Gunaji and Supriya Karnik). Everyone makes fun of him. However a college girl Tina (Rinkie Khanna) falls in love with Ganga and wants to marry him. But towards the end Ganga goes back to where his heart belongs. The film has lots of insensible things which are very difficult to digest. The director has shown Govinda to be so simple that he has never seen a trouser or a slice of bread in his life. The story is not very good and the screenplay is very loose. The film has nothing great to talk about except Govinda and Reema Lagoo's performances. Both of them have given very good performances. Sonali Bendre and Rinkie Khanna provide the glamour. Mahesh Manjrekar is a director who is known to give sensitive films -- Vaastav, Nidaan and Aastitva is not so successful in comedy. Music is good especially Khem Che.... which is very nicely choreographed.
