Director Satish Kaushik's film Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai is a social family drama. It is the story of the trauma which a rape victim undergoes.

Priti (Aishwariya Rai) witnesses a stabbing incident by Bhavani Chaudhary (Mukesh Rishi) and complains to the police. In revenge, Chaudhray's brother Babloo (Puru Raaj Kumar) rapes Priti. Priti's father, ashamed of what has happened to his daughter, throws her out of the house. She is also forced to resign from her job and is publicly humiliated. Here comes Avinash (Anil Kapoor), who gives her shelter in his house. Also in the house are the two illegitimate children of Avinash's father (Anang Desai). Avinash also makes Priti MD of his company. Avinash and Priti become like the parents of the two children and they stay like a happy family.

Slowly Avinash starts loving Priti and proposes to her. Priti refuses the proposal telling him that she is not fit for her. Then comes Avinash's childhood friend Khushi (Sonali Bendre) from America who loves Avinash. Lots of melodrama and a happy ending.

Of the performers, Anil Kapoor is good as usual and gives a very restrained performance. Aishwariya Rai looks divinely beautiful. But her acting is not at all near to her previous films Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Taal. Most of the time she is crying and she is stiff in many scenes. Sonali Bendre is good.
