Rating: * * * *

Godmother, directed by Vinay Shukla, won 6 National Awards. It is a complete film about the current cast-ridden political scenario and how a woman rises to power and becomes deadlier than the men. It is an arty film made within the parameters of commercial cinema. The story is gripping and the screenplay does not leave any room for the word unbelievable.

Veeran (Milind Gunaji) abandons the drought-stricken village and comes to the city with his family. He becomes the leader of the Mer Community after killing his arch enemy. Keshubhai (Govind Namdeo) who is a lawyer makes use of the popularity enjoyed by Veeran in his community (for his own gain) and makes him the Sarpanj. Veeran is murdered when he comes to know about Keshubhai's corrupt activities and tries to oppose them.

Now Keshubhai and Veeran's brother Meru (Anup Soni) project Veeran's illiterate wife Rambhi (Shabana Azmi) as the leader so that they can do according to their wishes. But once Rambhi gets the power she learns all the political tactics and even removes Meru from the scene when he is trying to become a hurdle in her path.

Rambhi now becomes a strong woman and does not even think twice to kill someone or use her feminine charms to achieve something. She is always helped and supported by her aide Jagga (Nirmal Pandey).

However Rambhi realises that the path to achieve power was wrong when her son Karsan (Sharman Joshi) follows her footsteps. Karsan loves Sejal (Raima Sen). But when he comes to know that he will not be able to get Sejal as she loves Assad (Ashwin Kumar), he attacks Assad. This incident becomes a major communal issue and comes just at the time when Rambhi is near to achieving the Chief Minister's post. Keshubhai takes advantage of this to regain power. However without caring for her life she ends her life in doing a good deed -- getting married an Hindu-Muslim couple.

The end is a little abrupt. However the editing is just excellent which holds you till the end. The film is a detailed study of how women can be more powerful than men when in power. Whatever it is, the film belongs to Shabana Azmi. She is just too good in the film as Rambhi and deserved the award she got for best actress. She worked out the minutest details of Rambhi, her speech, her body language, her dresses and also her gestures. Even the rest of star cast have given commendable performances. The music is related to the tone of the film.
