DILLAGI

Cast: Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Urmila Matondkar, Dara Singh, Zoora Saigal
Director: Sunny Deol
Music: Jatin-Lalit
Rating: * *

Dillagi is Sunny Deol's directorial debut. One cannot say the same thing for his directorial abilities which is said for his acting talents. His direction needs a lot of improvement. The major drawback may be because of poor script. A short story is stretched for 3 hours with an overdose of melodrama.

The film has shades of Akshay-Saif-Kajol starrer Yeh Dillagi and Sunny-Mahima-Apoorva starrer Pyar Koi Khel Nahin. The first half resembles the college, style and glamour of Karan Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It is a triangular love story. The elder brother is industrialist Ranveer (Sunny Deol) who is disciplined and has built a five-star hotel. The younger one is Rajvir (Bobby Deol) who is a spoilt brat and is always found in pubs or college flirting with girls.

Now in Rajvir's college comes Shalini (Urmilla Matondkar) who falls in love with Rajvir. On the other hand Ranvir also falls in love with Shalini and sends a proposal which Shalini turns down. When Shalini asks Rajvir to get married and he in turn insults her, she is heart-broken. Then comes Ranvir again to console her. In due course she realises how deep Ranvir's love for her is and she also starts loving him. Till that time even Rajvir realises his mistake and that he is in love with Shalini. Finally the climax and who wins the girl.

The second half is too melodramatic. The over-stretched dramatic scenes become a mockery (especially the hospital scene where Ranvir is on his death-bed). Sunny Deol is not good in handling the emotional scenes. The film needed lots of editing and much more crisply screenplay.

On the acting front Sunny Deol is good. Urmilla fails to impress in the emotional scenes. The only thing she can do is wear the most glamorous dresses. Bobby Deol has performed well. Zohra Sehgal as the grandmother and Dara Singh as the father lend good support. But overall the film has very weak characterisation and so does not touch your heart at any point of time.
