DIL KYA KARE

Cast: Kajol, Ajay Devgan, Mahima Choudhary, Chandrachur Singh, Baby Akshita
Director: Prakash Jha
Music: Jatin-Lalit
Rating: * *

Parallel film-maker Prakash Jha who made films like Hip Hip Hurray, Damul, Mrityudand has failed miserably in his attempt to make an out-and-out commercial film. First it was Bandish starring Jackie Shroff and Juhi Chawla and now it is Dil Kya Kare. It seems Prakash Jha did not make this from his heart. The film is inspired from Shekhar Kapoor's masterpiece Masoom. But unfortunately Dil Kya Kare comes nowhere near it -- neither in terms of emotions, nor in terms of performances.

Anand Kishor (Ajay Devgan) is happily married to Kavita (Mahima Chaudhary). They have adopted a baby girl Neha (Akshita Garud). The couple's life revolves around Neha. There is a twist when a mysterious woman Nandita Rai (Kajol) starts meeting secretly with Neha and gives many valuable gifts to her. When Kavita finds out, she is furious but gives shelter in her own house when she comes to know that Nandita is the biological mother of Neha.

Now, there is a further twist and drama when Anand sees Nandita and recalls a brief encounter with Nandita years back in a train. The flashback follows. Anand rescues Nandita from goons in the train and then sleeps with her himself, without knowing her identity. Next morning she leaves Anand without further interaction. Nandita gets pregnant but on advice of her father leaves the child in an ashram and goes to Australia for further studies. Flashback over.

When Kavita finds out about Nandita and Anand, she seeks sympathy from her silent admirer-cum-friend Somu (Chandrachur Singh). Kavita also files divorce papers but then everyone knows what happens.

The story is different but not handled properly. The screenplay is poor and not at all convincing. Editing is poor. The major drawback is that the film lacks sensitiveness and emotion. You don't tend to sympathise with any of the characters.

Performance-wise Ajay Devgan is good. Kajol has tried her best to do better than what the role demanded but she was restricted by the characterisation of her role. In fact the surprise packet is Mahima Chaudhary. She is very good in emotional scenes; maybe hers is the only properly charted character. Chandrachur Singh has nothing to do. The child artist is too irritating at times manily because she has been given too many dialogues that sounds like an adult.

Music by Jatin Lalit is good especially a few songs like Dil Kya Kare..., Aisi Lahgan Lagi....

There are many unconvincing moments in the films like whatever the mistake a man makes he is still considered a Devtaa, and the main gist -- the train incident. The film is very slow. Just for the performances the film is given a fair rating
