In Bada Din, Shabana Azmi guzzles gin. Newcomer Marc Robinson swigs rum. And Tara Deshpande quaffs salty tears. It's a drinking movie, this. Whenever they're out of liquid refreshment, director Anjan Dutt equips Ms Azmi with a cigarette butt. Can't blame Alok Nath and his gang, then, for going bang-bang. Or a hysterical Mowgli-like boy suffering through a catatoneek pang. Oh yeah, and once in a while they do the ding-dong song thing. Is this a movie? No, it just depresses the hell out of us until we want to sprint to the nearest bar, and don whisky. And wonder why Ms Azmi consented to play a Gin Tin Tin Aunty, mouthing such 'Christian' dialogue as "Hum kya karne ko sakta haai?" Mr Robinson is camera-friendly, but his voice appears to be someone else's. Neither fish nor fowl, the Bada Din just leaves us scowling like an owl. Venture into the premises only if you want to let out a huge howwwwl. |
