Similarities and Differences
Between
Beauty and Belle
Okay, you're asking me, What the heck are you talking about? If you have ever read the fabulous book Beauty by Robin McKinley, you'd know. Robin McKinley has written two wonderful books that are retellings of the classic story of Beauty and the Beast. I highly recommend both of them. Emma McCandless, the writing genius behind The Wedding, has given me a list of similarities between the heroine of Robin McKinley's book, Beauty, and our own Belle.
SIMILARITIES
Both heroines love books.
Both heroines have a special relationship with a horse.
A tender scene involving birds appears in both books.
Beast presents Belle/Beauty with really big library in both books.
Both heroines feel out-of-place in their homes.
DIFFERENCES
Disney's
Belle is beautiful. McKinley's Beauty is plain (at least according to her).
Belle is an only child. Beauty has two older sisters.
Servants are enchanted objects. Servants are invisible.
Maurice is an inventor. Mr. Huston is a merchant.
Very good list! There are lots of other differences, but if we told you all of them, we'd spoil the stories! Although I must add that in almost all other adaptations of Beauty and the Beast, the Beast is a gentle prince who was transformed by an evil fairy, while in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, the Beast is a selfish prince-brat who must learn to love. Anyway, check out these books at your local library. Happy Reading! ;)
