(An outside shot of Capeside High School.Zoom to inside, where a mess of students had formed in the over-flowing halls.)
Joey Potter walked down the endless halls to class with Pacey Witter."Why are you following me, Pacey?" she had complained earlier.
"Bud is my boyfriend and you know he wouldn't hurt me. You're just jealous."
"Me? Jealous?" Pacey sneered. "What of?"
"That I finally got over Dawson, and I actually have someone I can refer to with the word 'friend' at the end and you don't."
"Oh, please, Josephine," Pacey retorted,"The guy has records. He really did rape Samantha Lewis and Nancy Williams. They don't go to this school anymore, do they?"
"I knew Sam. She moved because of her Dad's business location going to another state. But I never heard of this Nancy person, though. And doncha think he'd be in jail or at least juvenile hall if he really did pull a stunt like that?" Pacey threw up his hands in defeat.
"Okay, you got me there. But didn't you ever hear of getting away with murder?"
"Uh-huh, yeah, Pacey, I saw that movie. Completely pointless to society. Dawson made me watch it with him a couple of 'movie nights' ago. Bud did not murder anyone or rape anyone. He's too good a guy."
"That's what they all say,"Pacey sighed. "Ain't it always the one you don't suspect?"
"Nope."Joey shook her head, firmly standing her ground."As I recall in Scream, which I also was forced by Dawson, Billy was the most obvious. And yeah, Stu was also a suspect, even though killing Casey for dumping him was a dumb motive."
"Tell that to Bud,"Pacey mumbled.
"Huh?"Joey asked.
"Nothing," Pacey quickly replied.
"No, tell me, Pacey.Now." Joey commanded.
"Okay. Ya know Nancy? Well, you don't, but who cares, that's not the point. Anyway, back to the subject. She was Buddy-Boy's former girlfriend last year. When she caught him getting drunk with a couple of his pals and hitting on some blonde girl at one of Cliff's world famous parties, she got all pissed and told him to clean up his act.He didn't, so she dumped him."Pacey paused for a moment, to catch his breath."And what came to be of Nancy--" "The world may never know,"Joey cut him off.
"I know the whole deal."
"But you don't. The world does know. She was raped, Joey. And I don't want the same thing to happen to you."He slowly placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Pacey, that's really sweet of you to be such a good friend to me, but you're doing the same exact thing Dawson would. So stop being so totally paranoid, okay?"She laughed.
Pacey knew she only meant it as a joke, but still was a little afraid she thought he was being over-protective.He opened his mouth to say something else, but she covered it with her hand quickly, her fingers brushing past his lips.
"Save it, please?" she mock-begged.
"Hey,Joey!" They both turned around to see a red-headed jock, otherwise known as Bud.
"Can't talk now. " Joey loosened her grip on her books, and walked toward Bud, who put his arm around her. As they walked away, Joey called over her shoulder ,"Later! Don't wear yourself out,OK?!".
Pacey nodded and attempted a weak wave. As they dissapeared from his sight, he whispered to himself, "So she married an axe murderer."
Dawson Leery raced down the hall, knocking a couple people down as he went on his way, ignoring their muffled cries of "Hey!" "Watch where you're going!" and "Asshole!". He was too excited to notice them.
"Hey,Pacey!" he yelled to his friend.
"What have you got in your pants?"Pacey demanded. "Is it sterroids?"
"Yeah, whatever,"Dawson said. "Anyway, guess what?"
"What?!"Pacey asked in mock-interest and surprise.
"I've got an idea for another mini-movie!"
"Oh, not again!"Pacey groaned."The last Dawson Leery flick blew up before our very eyes. But I'm just curious; what's this one about?"
"Well,um...."Dawson stalled.
"One key word,"Pacey told him.
"Love," Dawson blurted out.
"Love?"
"Yeah, and... Killers! And Death! Mysteries! You know, that sorta thing."
"I think this is Joey's kinda movie," Pacey grinned."And you know I'm in."
"Great! I'll go tell Joey!"Dawson said happily, running down the hall to track her down.
"Good luck,"Pacey called after him.
Dawson finally caught up with Joey and Bud.
"Hey....Jo....Guess....What...."he panted.
"Whoa!"Joey cried."Oh God, Dawson. Sterroids?"
"Very funny. Anyway, I've got an idea for a killer movie!"
"Killer?Do you mean killer in general, or 'killer killer'?"
" 'Killer killer,' "Dawson replied, ignoring the surprised look on Bud's face, his cold, glassy blue eyes glaring at him.
"Okay, it's all good. I'll do a part."
"Yes! Thanks Jo, for helping a poor filmmaker out!" Joey nodded, and they said their good-byes.
At lunch, Pacey sat down next to Joey.
"Uh, Pacey.."she said.
"What?" he grinned.
"That's Becky's seat."
"Since when do we save seats?"Pacey sighed.
"Since kindergarten,"Joey informed him.
"Oh, yeah. You do have a point. I can tell when I'm not wanted."he added with fake-sadness.
"Sorry!"she called after him.He moved next to Dawson and Jen Lindley's table.
"Room for one more? Or is this table reserved for two?"
"Sit down."Dawson told Pacey.Pacey did as he was told and gave Dawson a little salute.
"Yes, Dawson, sir!"he replied in an army voice.
"Where's Joey?"Jen asked.
"Sitting with the preppy patrol."
"Well, she does have the freedom to sit where she wants," Jen pointed out.
"With Bud Carter and Becky Slater?Okay..."Pacey stared down at his tray.
"Well, anyway, let's get to my movie."
"Remember, Dawson, we don't want a Scream 3,"Jen warned him. "This should be completely original, you know."
"Okay." Dawson paused a moment, then repeated,"Okay, then. The main plot will be about a girl named, what is it?, oh yeah, Christine."
"The one that will be in all the sequels. Major slasher film rule,"Pacey said.
"Yup,"Dawson agreed.
Joey was sitting on her couch, watching TV,when the phone rang.
"I'll get it!"she called aloud, even though noone else was in the house, and picked up the reciever.
"Hello?"
"Help me!"
"Who is this? Becky?! What's wrong?"
"Help me, please!"Becky frantically screamed into the phone.
Joey could tell she was crying. "Oh,God! Where are you?"Joey asked, frightened.
"At my house! Oh,shit, help! It's Bud,he--"Becky was cut off. Joey could hear the loud buzz of the dial tone.
"Becky?Becky!" Joey was terrified now. What was happening to Becky? She knew she had to do something, and fast. Doing the first thing that came to her mind, she rapidly punched in Pacey's number. It rang three times until Pacey finally answered.
"Pacey, I need help! Right now!"
"Whoa, Joey! What is it?"Pacey demanded.
"It's Becky!"
"What about her?"Pacey sighed. Joey was growing impatient now, and didn't need to deal with an explanation.
"Just get the hell over here now!"Joey cried angrily."Please! It's an emergency!"she begged to Pacey again.
Pacey at first thought maybe it was a prank the jocks and popular students put Joey up to. But then again, he decided, it's not everyday that one of your best friends frantically screams for help over the phone. "I'll be right over,"he told her, hoping this wasn't a hoax.
Pacey pulled the truck up to Joey's home and found her waiting eagerly on the front porch, about to burst. As soon as he got out, Joey ran into his arms.He started to enjoy the moment, but then remembered why he was there, then looked down and realized she was crying.
"Hey,now,"he whispered gently to her, pushing her hair away from her face.
"She called me again,"Joey sobbed, her shoulders shaking.
"Who called you?"Pacey asked.
"Be...Becky.She said she was dying! That he left her there again--"
"Let's not waste any time then,"Pacey replied. They rushed to the vehicle and sped off. "Where does she live?"
"Down next to Cliff,"Joey replied sadly. Pacey put his arm around her, forcing a bittersweet smile.
"It'll be alright...I promise," he told her reasurringly, although he wasn't so sure himself. After a grand total of three minutes, he finally found Becky's large beachhouse, right next to Cliff's,as Joey had said. Joey practically flung herself from the seat and ran up to the door, then banged it.
"Becky! Becky!" Two paramedics rushed out of the door carrying a stretcher. Joey gave a little gasp, then peeked over to see who was on the stretcher. It was Becky, her body lifeless, with a small trail of blood escaping her open throat.
"Nooo!" Joey screamed, frustrated, confused, and most of all, sad, at the same time. She hadn't noticed the red and white ambulance parked outside earlier. "Where are you taking her?! Where?" she had yelled at the top of her lungs to the paramedics.
"The hospital, miss," a blonde haired paramedic had replied matter-of-factly.
Pacey hurt deep inside to see Joey pained like this. He knew the paramedics could care less if Becky died. They saw things like this every day, so one more to add to the body count was nothing new to them.
"C'mon, Jo."He gently took her arm in an attempt to pull her away from the scene.
"Oh,Pacey.."Joey cried again. Before he knew it, she had pressed her lips against his, in a tight, embracing kiss.He kissed her back. He couldn't say that he hadn't waited for that in a long time, although he knew it was probably just 'spur of the moment'; something to calm her nerves, her feeling like a basket case at the time.He swiftly wrapped his arms around her waist, as she slowly put her arms around his neck. He didn't notice, or care, that the paramedics had already left, even though the ambulance siren blared loudly as they drove off.Soon Joey had stopped kissing him, and she just pressed her cheek against his, letting the tears on her face slowly drip onto him. ' This is what you always wanted, isn't it?' Pacey thought to himself. 'For her to love you back, right?' 'But somehow it's wrong...' Pacey thought again, and then, finally, she softly kissed his ear as she whispered into it,"Thanks..For being there..." ' The hell with it being wrong,'he thought again, then kissed her forehead, caressing her long hair at the same time.
Joey woke up in the middle of the night, confused. She didn't know where she was. The last thing she remembered was earlier that evening Becky being carried away, sobbing uncontrollably, and giving Pacey a friendly kiss, hugging him. It took a while to realize it:she was at Pacey's house--she was in his bed! She gave out a little cry, and saw that Pacey was sleeping next to her. He had his arm around her shoulders. Her first thought was to wake him up, but he looked so peaceful, so content, that she dared not to. She semi-shrugged, then struggled to make herself comfortable in Pacey's bed.
In the morning, Pacey gently nudged Joey. "Huh,what?..."She shielded her eyes from the bright sunlight.
"Where am I?"she demanded, even though she knew perfectly well where she was.
Pacey blushed."Well,um,my house. In my room. In my bed."
"Oh my god!"Joey jumped up, with a small shriek.
"Nothing happened, don't worry,"Pacey laughed with a usually cheesy grin.
"Don't you even try with me, Mr.Cocky,"Joey grumbled tiredly."Why am I here, anyway?"
"Because....Don't you even remember last night?"Pacey asked, a bit fearful.
"No,"Joey admitted truthfully. It suddenly hit Pacey --- all the extra stress had caused Joey to suffer from a slight case of amnesia during the night. It broke his heart to think that she didn't remember that wonderful kiss...He snapped out of his thoughts to see a familiar figure leaning against his doorframe.
"Hey stud, I didn't know you had visitors this early."
"Shut up,"Pacey told his brother.
"Oh, it's Joey.Hey,"Doug called over to her.
"Hi,"she murmured, still evidence of her lack of sleep from the previous night.
"What're you doin' here?"Doug asked. It was too late for Pacey to even try--Doug had became interested/involved;he wasn't leaving anytime soon.
"That's what I was just about to ask Pacey.." They both turned, looking at Pacey expectantly.
"Uh...Heh heh heh..." Pacey tried to stall.
"Well?"Joey interrupted.
"You fell asleep on the way back from Becky's,"Pacey said, hoping that would clear things up. Joey stared at him wide-eyed, apparantly now more confused than ever."What?"
"Becky?"Doug asked.
"Yeah.Becky Slater,"Pacey replied.
"Oh...Slater,Slater....I know I heard that name before!"Doug whispered in pure awe to himself. "Now I know!"he cried. "Some guy was brought into the station last night for murdering Rebecca Slater!"
"Murdered?"Pacey asked with a gulp. He knew once Joey snapped out of it she would flip.
"Oh, no."Doug slapped himself in the forehead with his palm. "I meant attacked." Pacey looked over to Joey; she still seemed dazed. 'Dazed and Confused', Pacey thought to himself, almost chuckling.'Another god-damn movie reference!'
"I dunno what you guys are talking about."Joey spoke, looking at them both intently with her dark, intense eyes."What about Becky, anyway?" Pacey started to speak, but Doug interrupted with a wink.
"It'll all come back, bro.Just give it time. Right now, go for it!" Doug left, leaving Pacey and Joey puzzled. Pacey ran after his brother in the hall.
"How did you know?" Doug partially shrugged.
"I read your signals."He shook his head laughing."Man,you want her bad !"
"What are you talking about?"Pacey demanded.
"You know what I'm talking about,"Doug replied."What's-her-name;Joey. You're in love with her and you know it!" Pacey tried to laugh it off,but knew it was true.
As if he could read minds, Doug went on. "You carried her in last night.Mom could've let her sleep in the guestroom, but noo.You needed to have her sleep in your room;in your bed, with you. You're a sad story, my friend." Doug left Pacey standing alone in the hall, speechless.
What's in store for us next? Will Pacey confess his feelings for Joey? Does she like him in the same way? What kind of catastrophe will happen to Dawson's new movie?
And whatever happened to Becky and Bud?...
