Author’s note: This begins right after the season’s premier so
Lyle is on the Jarod chase and Sydney got his eyesight back.
Jarod slowly walked down the dark hallway, with his brown
eyes scanning the area carefully. He looked down the far end of
the hall and saw a closed elevator. As he got closer, the doors
began to slide open and Miss Parker’s figure soon appeared in
the dim light, gun in hand and anger and revenge in her eyes.
Jarod stared at her and the gun in confusion for a moment
before opening his mouth to speak, but she cut him short.
“Shut-up,” she hissed. Jarod snapped his jaw shut. “Your father
killed my mother. So now… I’ll kill you!”
“But it wasn’t my fault. I…” Jarod began.
“Shut-up! You had everything to do with it! You deserve to
die! She didn’t! You are the one who deserved to die!” she
shouted, tears making her eyes sparkle. Jarod shook his head
softly.
“No! I didn’t… I don’t!”
“Yes! Yes you do!” she screamed, taking aim at his chest with
her gun.
He now could see her lips quivering in angry and sorrow.
“Miss Parker, please… I…”
“No! Just shut-up!” she screamed, tears now streaming down
her thin face. She tightened her finger on the trigger. “This is for
my mother… and for me!” and with that, the gun went off,
releasing a huge echoing bang through the corridor. Jarod let
out a gasp of pain as he felt the bullet pierce through his body.
He watched her face as he slowly lowered to the floor on his
knees. Her face was so blank, and yet so sad at the same time
as he felt the life of him begin to slide from his grasp. Soon the
floor came to meet his body and darkness followed.
“No!” Jarod shouted, jolting up in bed. He looked around the
dark room nervously as his bare chest rapidly moved up and
down from his ragged breaths. Lifting his hand to his forehead,
he felt the fever still there. “Damn,” he murmured to himself after
realizing that he still was sick.
He let out a moan as he swung his legs carefully over the side of
the bed and pushed himself to his feet. With bare-feet, he made
his way to the kitchen of the apartment room and began to dig
through the cabinets for the medicine. He let out a sigh as he
pulled the almost empty bottle from the cupboard. Holding a
glass under the running water of the sink, he plopped a pill into
his mouth and took a gulp of water.
He then, climbed unto a stool by the kitchen’s bar and laid his
head in his arms. “Oh…” he moaned. “Please, make it go
away!” he whined, referring the illness he has had over two
days now.
He felt like crap. His head hurt, his stomach ached… he felt like
he was going to die, in which he wished he might. Anything to
make the torture go away. And to make matters worse, he
knew for a fact that Broots was figuring out where he was at
this exact moment. Giving Jarod not a second to waste to get
better, research the files that he had came to New York for,
pack and make a clean break out of this state leaving no trail
behind him.
With that thought, he let out a frustrated sigh and he leaped off
the stool and onto his feet. “Oh!” he yelped, leaning on the
counter as he realized he got up to fast. The whole room was
spinning. He slowly lowered himself to the floor.
“Why? What is wrong with me?” he asked himself softly, as he
sat there on the cold kitchen floor. He closed his eyes and
leaned back on a stool leg, waiting for the spinning to subside,
but letting out a sad sigh as there was no change. He had never
had the flu before.
BANG, BANG! He heard a loud knocking on his door. He
quickly snapped his head up to look down the hall to the front
door. He stared at it for a moment in surprise and then glanced
at the digital clock on the kitchen counter across from him.
12:28 it read. Jarod cocked his head to the side in confusion.
Who could possible be here so late in the…
“Oh no!” Jarod whispered. Just then, he heard another loud…
BANG, BANG, BANG! He slowly, using the counter for
support, rose to his feet. He stood there, staring down the hall
at the unopened door and tried to get his thoughts in check.
If it is the Centre, why haven’t they just busted the door down?
With that thought, Jarod tiptoed down the hall, keeping his eyes
onto the door for any further noises or movements. When he
reached it, he leaned forward, placing both hands on its cold
wood, and peeked through the peek hole.
He inhaled sharply at the sight of… blackness. Jarod pulled
away and stared off into space in thought. Getting his courage
up, he reached for the lock and clicked it open, then reaching
upward, slid the chain from its slot. He stepped back a little and
slowly opened the door.
“What took you so long!” someone shouted, pushing the door,
causing it to bump into Jarod, flinging him to the wall behind it.
“Mallory! What are you…”
“I was wondering if you had any sugar, sugar,” she said with a
smile and a wink. She made her way to his kitchen.
"Look, Mal it is really late…” he began, following her down the
hall.
"Yeah, I know, really late to be baking. But I was hungry for
cake and…”
"No, really late to be waking people.”
“Oh that. You don’t mind, do you sugar?” she said with a
puppy-dog-face and began to dig in his cupboards. Jarod
leaned on the island in the middle of the kitchen and watched as
she pulled out boxes one by one and read the brand.
Mallory Francis, room D31, lives just down the hall from Jarod.
Lucky him. She was barely serious at times. Being in the age of
33, she was said to be in her ten’s. Jarod believed it. But she
can be fun to be around, calling her a friend of Jarod’s. He had
met her when he was unpacking his things in his room and had
left the door open, mistake number one. She came in and had
introduced herself. Jarod thought she was nice until she came
over every day, telling him a story he didn’t need to know but
still smiled and nodded.
A flying box of oatmeal making its way towards his face
snapped him out of his thoughts. He caught it just in time.
“Whew. Now I don’t need the search party anymore, I found
you!” she said to Jarod sarcastically. “You were staring off into
space, sugar. Thought you left me for a better place.”
Jarod smiled and set the box on the counter. “I wish I had.”
“Ha…ha… very funny,” she said sarcastically. She lifted the
box of sugar in his face. “You mind?”
“No, not at all,” he said, pushing it away.
“Thanks a million!” she said, brushing past him and walking
down the hall to the door. Before leaving, she turned and
shouted back, “See you tomorrow!” And with that the door
closed behind her and she was out of his sight.
He rolled his eyes playfully and smiled. “That just made my
head ache worst.”
“Ah, h-he is in New York,” Broots stuttered out, glancing from
the computer screen to look at Miss Parker. Miss Parker
studied the screen and then snapped her fingers suddenly.
“Broots, New York, Now!” was all she said, leaving the man to
his orders. She took off down the hall and entered Sydney’s
office.
“Syd, you joining me?” she asked, barging in and noticing Lyle
there as well. “Oh, sorry. Didn’t know you were here… bro,”
she sarcastically said.
“Well, don’t let me stop you. Joining you on what?” Lyle asked,
getting up from the leather chair, in which he had been sitting at.
Miss Parker stared at him for a moment then turned to Sydney.
“Sydney, we found our Boy Wonder in New York,” she said,
then turned to Lyle. “Will there be three seats on the plane, or
four?”
“Three, can’t join you at the moment. I have… other things to
attend to,” he muttered. Miss Parker smiled wickedly.
“Great,” she said, just a hint of sarcasm.
“Hey Jarod!” Jarod glanced behind him to see Mallory running
down the hall towards him. Just the thing to make him sick
again. “Where you heading so early in the morning?”
“No business worth to you. Why you ask?” Jarod said with a
smile, pushing against the glass exit door and stepping outside,
followed by Mallory.
“Well, I have nothing better to do, can I come?” she asked,
watching him wave for a taxi. Jarod looked at her with an
eyebrow lifted.
“Hmm… tough question. Taxi!” he shouted in frustration.
“Well?” she asked.
“Taxi!” Jarod shouted again. He let his arm fly limply to his side
as he watched another taxi fly past the corner of which they
stood. “Sure why not, but only if you can get us a taxi!”
With that, she gave him a huge girlish smile and placed two
fingers in her mouth. Soon a piercing whistle sounded through
the air, causing Jarod to wince. Shortly after, a yellow cab
pulled to a stop in front of them. Jarod looked at Mallory in
astonishment, while she smiled playfully back.
"Show off,” Jarod murmured, as he climbed into the cab.
“I live to show,” she said, climbing in after him.
“Yeah, I bet you do,” Jarod replied playfully. She punched in
lightly in the shoulder.
“Where to?” the cab driver asked, looking at Jarod in his rear
view mirror.
“The Town Police Department,” Jarod said. Mallory wrinkled
her nose in disgust.
“That is boring! Let’s go to the park, or get ice cream or… I
know, let’s go see a movie. I hear ‘Bride of Chucky’ is really
good…”
“What makes you think you can choose the events when
“Oh c’mon Jarebear! Take me somewhere… fun!”
“And why would I want to do that?”
“Please?” she asked with puppy-dog-eyes.
“I hate when you do that!”
“Hey I learned it from you!”
“Did not!”
“Did to!”
“Did not!”

“I don’t mean to interrupt, but where will it be?” the cab driver
