Humphrey DeForest Bogart was born on January 23rd, 1899 in New York, New York. He has become one of the legends in film history, and had an extensive career. Because of this, I'm only going to include his most famous and well-liked movies.
Bogart's films with Bette Davis:
Bogart starred in many movies with screen queen Bette Davis. Their first movie together was the 1931 drama, "Bad Sister". The next year, Bogie played Harve, a henchman, and Davis played Ruth Wescott in "Three on a Match". It's the story of three childhood friends, and their disbelief in the superstition about having three people using the same match. In 1936, Bogart gave one of his best performances as gangster Duke Mantee in "The Petrified Forest". It's a must-see for any fan of Humphrey Bogart! In 1937, Bogart and Bette were once again teamed together in "Marked Woman". But instead of playing his usual gangster role, Bogie plays prosecutor David Graham, who tries to get bad guy Johnny Vanning put away for murder.
Later that year, with the help of tough guy Edward G. Robinson, Bogart and Davis made "Kid Galahan". They both had some weird nicknames: Bette was named Fluff Phillips, and Bogart played Turkey Morgan. In 1939, Bogie played stable boy Michael O' Leary in "Dark Victory". This wonderful tear-jerker also starred George Brent, Geraldine Fitgerald, Henry Travers, and Ronald Reagan. Bette Davis always said that this was her favorite movie. Davis and Bogart worked together for the last time in the star-studded wartime morale booster, "Thank Yor Lucky Stars". Bogart played himself, and worked alongside Olivia de Havilland, Errol Flynn, Eddie Cantor, John Garfield, Ida Lupino, and more.
Humphrey Bogart in the 1930's:
Bogie played a lot of gangsters with tough nicknames in the 30's. For example, he was Bugs Fenner in "Bullets or Ballots" in 1936, Baby Face Martin in "Dead End" in 1937, and Rocks Valentine in "The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse" in 1938. Also in 1938, Bogart played weasely lawyer James Frazier in "Angels With Dirty Faces", starring James Cagney and Pat O'Brien. Although Cagney is the star and sympathetic character, Bogart gives a fantastic performance is this great movie. It's a must-see! Cagney and Bogart's chemistry was so good, they teamed up again in the 1939 western, "The Oklahoma Kid", and in the great gangster movie, "The Roaring Twenties". If your a gangster movie buff, this one's for you!
