Friday, July 16th, 1999: Riding the Staten Island Ferry

After the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, the Rally attendees attempted to navigate New York's subway system in order to get to Battery Park to catch the Staten Island Ferry.

Statue of Libery from Staten Island Ferry "'Isn't it great, the salty sea air, the wind blowing in your face?' OK, yeah, that was a quote from The Little Mermaid, but it described how incredible it was. I had never seen the Statue of Liberty in person before. Actually I had never ridden a boat in the Hudson either. OR SEEN THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE!!!!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Riding the ferry with everyone was amazing! We all had the movie to talk about and our favorite newsies!! YEAH!"
~Katie

"It was a nice relaxing thing to do which gave all of us the opportunity to talk and there was that nice view of the Statue of Liberty."
~Crystal

"I was finally able to sit back on the ferry and relax and talk to the other Newsie freaks about Newsie topics (such as our favorite scenes, Davey and Denton scandal, etc.)."
~Tina

"Even though this was rather uneventful I think it was really important in getting to know each other. We found out who everyone's fave newsie was and discussed the views on "Davey and Denton" (a personal fave topic of mine). I also got to tell everyone about Twisty---one of the dancers (I named him myself) who looks like my friend Christian. You can see Twisty in Seize the Day (the reprise). I forget who he's standing between but I think it's Jack and Dave. He wears a blue hat and he sticks his tongue out when he sings. ALL HAIL TWISTY!!!"
~Kristy

Manhattan Shoreline from Staten Island Ferry "The ferry ride was cool, albeit not air-conditioned. It was free and the views were nice, plus you could hang your head out the window where you’ve got a breeze. All us girls chatted about our favorite newsies and various other points of interest regarding the film. It was quite fun, although I was very disappointed that I was the only Balehead in the bunch. (How can you all like Spot? Jack is sooooooooo better.) ;)"
~Alicia

"I think the Staten Island Ferry really gave us a chance to get to know each other better, plus there were some fantastic views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan. It was cosmic to be able to discuss Newsies with people who understood it like I did, and to share my views on the Davey-Denton thing without having people act like I was insane. Plus, I think, it gave our parents a chance to form somewhat of a support group. :) For some reason my parents think I watch Newsies too much..."
