Aktivities Skrapbook 05
The Staircase Experiment

What you'll need:

Cardboard box
Stairs
Recording machine
Objects for throwing down stairs

1. Collect objects you won’t mind rolling down the stairs, but that will make good noise. Metal is best. Pots and pans, toys, marbles are all good. Stuffed animals and paper products aren’t very useful. Try to vary size as much as possible.

2. Put your stuff in a box, and set the box at the top of a set of stairs, preferably between six and twelve steps.

3. At the bottom of the stairs, place your recording device, and hit the big red Record Button.

4. Run to the top of the stairs, and dump out its contents.

5. Stop the recorder.

6. Repeat steps 2-5 as many times as you like. Consider filling a thirty minute cassette.

7. Listen to your recording as often as possible.

Result: After repeatedly listening to your once random arrangement of sound, your brain has memorized the order and nuances of the recording. You have learned a valuable lesson: Pattern is Overrated. Shout it from the mountain top, brother! Now, go read the manifesto.
