I was born in 1961 (real old huh?) Battle of the Planets was first broadcast in 1978, yes that means I was watching kid's cartoons at the ripe age of seventeen wanna make something of it?
Good.
Bowdlerized as BotP was enough of the original characterization and plot leaked through to make it very different from standard American cartoon fare. I was sufficiently enamored to make audio tapes of a number of episodes (no VCRs back then, kids.) and transcribe others from memory in a notebook.
Many years later at college I encountered an Anime fan who informed me that BotP was merely a pale reflection of the Japanese original and showed me at least one episode. Since I don't speak Japanese I didn't get much out of it except that Princess, I mean Jun (pronounced June, according to Melanie), says yes or rather "Hai" a whole lot.
Many, many years after that I see something called 'Eagle Riders' listed on the cartoon network and am curious enough to check it out, only to cry 'Eagle Riders Hell! It's Battle of the Planets!' Except that the names were wrong, the voices wrong and no Zark (Yaah!).
Still more years (say three) pass and I discover while surfing the net that I am not the only mature (well semi-mature) adult who still likes Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets/G-Force/Eagle Riders/et. al. ad infinitum. A fact I find immensely reassuring.
Gatchaman Fan Fiction tends to be rather better than many of the episodes. I strongly recomend the works of Alara Rogers (lovely name); Lori MacDonald and the meliflously named Ennien whose works include the noncanonical but very funny BotP fic 'Listening In' in which Princess gets a first hand view of just what Zoltar has to put up with from his subordinates, sister and the Luminous One.
