Summersault '98
What happens when a young Canadian band is formed, through musician want ads, and begins their journey on the musical road? Demo tape leads to label deal. Label deal leads to debut album. Debut album leads to the road. National home turf is visibly tracked, swaying south now and then and over the pond here and there. Many bands are met along the journey. Relationships are formed, musicianship is admired and influences are absorbed. Album number two is set loose and away it soars. Headlining begins and festivals continue to be the norm, but a celebration with those who helped carve their road still needs to be explored.
Summersault 98 is here! The creation of Canadian band, Our Lady Peace, who have been spiraled to the forefront of the international music scene, Summersault is a specially packaged celebration about some of the fundamental elements in a musician's life - the fans, the relationships and the influences.
"When you are lucky enough to travel around with your music, it is always nice to sit back and reflect on the road that brought you to where you are standing. By watching, playing with and getting to know other musicians, we feel that we have been able to continue to learn and grow ourselves." Raine Maida, vocalist, Our Lady Peace.
With Our Lady Peace at the helm, fans are guaranteed to walk away from Summersault 98 with a vibe that they just can't shake! All the artists on the bill are acts who Our Lady Peace have enjoyed playing with in the past, or have been musically inspired by, with the hopes that one-day they could share the stage with. A few stories:
Garbage - Europe, Spring 1998. Our Lady Peace bumps into Garbage in a hotel lobby. The conversation ends in mutual agreement that it would be a lot of fun to do a big show together. Molson Park, August 23rd - look for Garbage on the main stage.
I Mother Earth - History brings IME and OLP back to the beginning years of OLP when their first national tour was supporting IME. The bands have been friends ever since. Summersault 98 is I Mother Earth's first performance since new lead singer Brian Byrn joined the group. The band is also taking a break from recording their new album to join Our Lady Peace at Summersault.
MOIST - Hoping to see MOIST on last years Edgefest didn't pan out, this year will finally see the two bands play together on the main stage.
Sloan - With the Maritimes as their roots, Sloan was an obvious choice to add to the bill when Our Lady Peace was rounding up their friends to join them on stage.
The Crystal Method - Always liking to mix things up a little, Our Lady Peace has invited The Crystal Method to close Summersault 98 at Molson Park. The two bands' paths have crossed at many radio festivals in America and Our Lady Peace has always enjoyed The Crystal Method's techno wizardry and dynamic show.
In it's inaugural year, Summersault's routing has been chosen with much thought and reason. The much less visited corners of Canada, Newfoundland and New Brunswick, are locales where other big Festivals, including last summer's Edgefest, have never stopped. And while Southern Ontario is home for the band it also has Molson Park, which has seen a few festivals. It is the natural testing grounds for the Summersault version that the rest of the country can look forward to in future summers to come!
