Rachel's
Impressions . . .
I first saw _Heathers_ the summer before my freshman
year of high school,
which would be 1990, on cable TV..I was mesmerized
by the movie,
particularly this incredibly dark and yet sympathetic
character of Jason
Dean.
My favourite Hallowe'en costume for a while was
Jason Dean..for a while
there I had boyishly short dark hair and would
just gel that into place, put
on a long black coat, apply bruise makeup and
stage blood to my face(I was
doing one of his final scenes), wrap my hand
in a bandage liberally doused
in stage blood (taking care to keep the middle
finger in set position) and
sally forth in that getup in my high school on
Oct 31. I'd also wear a black
t-shirt I could imagine J.D. wearing (the Sid
Vicious one usually won out)
and blue jeans..oh and the bomb. I should mention
the bomb.
The bomb was made with the help of my mother..it
was essentially a thick
rectangle of styrofoam covered with black construction
paper with red felt
"buttons" and a digital readout made with paper
and markers. Little
cylinders of epoxyglue stick (the dynamite) were
glued to the side of the
"bomb" and covered with more construction paper.
Finally, "wires" were added
connecting the bomb to the "dynamite" (I'm not
sure what we used..some kind
of thick cord, like floral wire). All this was
attached to a belt I tied
around my waist over my shirt and under my coat.
The first take on this costume was for a Hallowe'en
party I was throwing, so
we had removable paper readouts..as the party
progressed I'd surreptiously
tear off the readouts so every once in a while
someone would notice that the
time had decreased. The last readout read a few
seconds to go--after someone
noticing this, I excused myself hastily from
the room and into the hallway
and a pre-recorded "explosion" noise was set
off on a gadget I had for that
purpose. My mother would cheerfully announce
that since J.D. had blown up,
it was time to serve the cake. I'd wander out
a bit later out of
costume...Yes you're right, my mother is a great
womon and yes I love her
very much.
The reactions at school were great..I'll never
forget the occasional shouts
of "Greetings and salutations" as I'd walk down
the hall, as well as trying
to explain the costume concept and movie to my
less-than-thrilled
vice-principal, trying to explain that the movie
did not actually _condone_
teen suicide or murder, it was just _about_ these
things..and I will never
forget winning "Best Media Costume" at a fantasy/scifi/generalfandom
convention for the getup (it was just some movie
posters--Batman Returns and
Cool World--and a Batman Returns T-shirt, but
still). And I owe it all to
this sick, wonderful little movie.
Oh yeah, and Mom. :) |
