From clubz@acs.ucalgary.ca Here is a transcription of an interview with George Lucas on Entertainment Tonight, March 13. The interview took place at Disneyland in California, outside of the new Indiana Jones ride. [indicate visuals] [George on the new Indiana Jones ride] [Indiana Jones Clip] ET: George has revealed to me that he is working on a new Indiana Jones movie, which will reunite him with both Steven Spielburg and Harrison Ford. GL: The thing with Indian Jones is that I didn't have to do anymore, Harrison didn't, Steve didn't. None of us had to do it, its purely a labour of love, there's no other reason than just the fun of it. That's the only motivating factor. [clips from "Star Wars", and making of Star Wars. Including the models used in the trench scene on the first death star] ET: Another labour of love is going back to the original 1977 Star Wars movie, and adding new footage, for a projected theatrical re-release. GL: I'm adding some scenes that were in the original film, but because of the time constraints, having to get it released, and just the cost, and the technology just wasn't there, I wasn't actually able to put into the movie. [clip of Harrison Ford, and Jabba the Hut from "Return of the Jedi"] GL: And a lot of the story there involves Han Solo and Jabba the Hut. [clip of Luke and Obi-Wan entering Mos Eisly] GL: The entry into Tatooine is much more elaborate. There were a lot of animals that people were riding but weren't going very far, and now they can actually go a lot faster. [clip of Sandpeople and Banthas] GL: I can make everything much more fluid. ET: So you're using 90's effects technology to juice up your late seventies film? GL: Yep. To do what I wanted to do in the original, but couldn't. [clip of tie fighters, C3P0 etc] ET: And yes, he's also hard at work on the next Star Wars trilogy, aimed at a release in 1998 or 99. [clips of Yoda from "Empire Strike Back"] GL: I've waited this long because before I couldn't have Yoda walk, I had to sort of figure out complicated ways to put him on Lukes back or to have him sit in his house, or to do things, but now I can have him walk...I'm unlimited in my ability to manouvre around in the environment. It makes writing a lot more fun. ET: There is one more thing I wanted to know. Is there a piece of Star Wars memoribilia or merchandise that you're fondest of? GL: Oh gee, I don't know, I guess probably my favorite in terms of merchandise is the Wookiee Mug. That's the one thing I've kept out of the whole thing. {the segment ended with the hosts of the show bringing on a security guard who brought in the mug.}
