The Psalms of David somehow reach the corners of my soul,
Sanctifying joy and sorrow, making my devotion whole.
Yet deeper reach the words of Christ, great David's greater son,
Finishing the work of changing me the Psalms had just begun.
There's a stirring, rousing influence the prophets bring to bear:
A burning hatred of all sin, and hope beyond despair.
Still, this Spirit of true righteousness, which pierces like a sword
Speaks with more than double portion in the sayings of our Lord.
When I want to comprehend the deepest mysteries of all
My mind is well-directed by the wisdom of St. Paul.
But he himself is careful to keep pointing to the One
Who's the source of all true wisdom, Jesus Christ, God's only Son.
The apostles and the prophets, holy men of God's own choice,
Spirit-borne in Scripture writing: Read them well and heed their voice.
But the greatest, deepest sweetest words that heav'n and earth afford
Are the all-surpassing, purifying sayings of our Lord.
