Abbreviations

  1. FTM has no provision for designating compound first names, such as "Mary Ann". Consequently, the various parts of the program that arbitrarily abbreviate names will incorrectly list these names.

Palliative
The non-breaking space (code 0160) may be used to weld the two first names together, but this may not permit proper location by search engines, limiting the utility of the results. FTM's own Find Individual will find these even if the search argument is entered without the "0160" code, but we don't know about other search engines. Also, the character is too invisible; One cannot tell whether it is already present in the name or not!
  1. When building a book, the name of the currently selected individual is incorporated into the names of items which may be selected to include in the book. FTM insists on abbreviating these names, whether space requires or not, and the abbreviated names will be incorporated in the Table of Contents, if one is included. Here are three examples

  2.
Entered by user: Used by FTM:
Roderic Alan Davis, 2nd Roderic A. Davis
This is a different individual, my father!
Edward I \\, King of England Edward I.
Note the "abbreviation" of "I" to "I."
Sancha of León Sancha o. León
    Abbreviated "of" to "o."
McE: Previously reported as fixed in 5.0, the fix is only partial. Most reports are fixed, but all three  GenRpts still exhibit this wart.

Aliases

(a/k/a)

  1. Aliases are listed in the online Index Page, but indistinguishable from ordinary names. This can cause confusion and wasted effort bringing up the Family Page, thinking there is an error, only to find that the name was an alias. Aliases should be displayed italicized in the index.
  2. FTM has only one field, called a/k/a, for:
    1. Aliases, Stage names, Noms de plume, Nicknames, Sobriquets, etc.
Of course, one field cannot accommodate all of these. The product needs additional types of fields, particularized for each sort of appellation, and probably several of each. Some people may have had several aliases, for example.

Sorting, Indexing

  1. Names are sorted incorrectly (in the online index, e.g.) when suffixes are involved.  A person with a middle name should come after all those without one, suffixes notwithstanding (assuming identical first and surnames).
  2. Surnames beginning with "St." should be indexed as if spelled out ("Saint"), but are not. [McE]
  3. "St." is automatically considered part of the surname, but "Ste.", the feminine form, is not.

Other

  1. Capacity: Capacity is advertised to be "about 2 million" names.  Actual capacity is significantly less than that. One user ran out of gas with fewer than 200,000 individuals. System was a P-II, 300 MHZ, with several 10GB drives, 96 MB of RAM, and 80% of the resources available.
