Books: Index Items
The Book Facility can include any of the standard reports. In addition,
one can include a special Index Item, which lists all the people who appear
in the other standard reports included in the book, with the page numbers
where they appear.

Problems associated with the
content of the index. |
|
-
Omissions: One item
to include in Custom Reports is
"Spouse". Individuals thus listed are not included in the book index.
-
Spurious: One item
to include or exclude from the Custom Report
is
the name of the included individual. The individual is indexed regardless
if his name is included in the custom report or not, leading to situations
where the index points to a page where the associated name cannot be found.
|
Together, these two
warts allow a Custom Report of
just spouses, without listing their partners' names. The spouses named
in the report will not be indexed, but their unnamed partners will be. |
|
-
Omissions: Including Spouse's Mother and
Spouse's Father in an ODT does not include them in the Book Index. [See

Title: All Book Items include the option
to print the item title on every page — except Index of Individuals. So
much for uniformity of style.
|
There is an option
to change the header or footer of the whole book, and the item name may
be included this way. Books | Book Header and Footer. |

Multi-column index
forms are offered, but provision is made for column
balancing, which would be needed for that
"professional look". [McE]
-
Formatting: If the
index runs to several pages, it's possible that entries may be split across
pages. Such entries
should be kept together (not split) or some indication as "Doe, John (cont.)"
is needed at the top of the second page.

Usability: Like-named
individuals are indistinguishable. FTM solved a similar problem in the
online index by including the birth and death dates. The same should be
done here.
