Data Entry
Problems entering data into FTM.

  1. Offspring: If you enter the birth date on a child in the offspring list, and it appears that this entry may duplicate an extant individual, FTM will present a dialog asking if they are the same person. If you reply "No", you should be placed back on the child for whom you were entering data, but you will not be unless that child was among the first four for those parents. If you were entering data for child number 6, for example, the display will zip back to show offspring numbers 1-4. (The display can only show 4 offspring at a time.)
  2. Offspring: Fastfield assistance for the surname is provided when entering names of children on the Family Page. Fastfield assistance here is "turned off" after deleting a child or children.
  1. Dates: FTM 5.0b will change "October 17, 1744 - January 13, 1745" to the proper double-date form: "Bet. October 17, 1744 - January 13, 1744/45", but that latter form is not accepted on original input, giving "Date Entry Error"
  2. Marriage Data: One cannot enter marriage data unless a spouse's name has been entered. This forces use of notations like "<unknown>" for a spouse name upon unwilling users, just to "open up" the marriage data fields. (It is not uncommon to have marriage data without a spouse name.) [McE]
