  1. Data from the Social Security Death Index is imported and cited with a footnote, not a Master Source.
  2. Entries are missing. Compare:

  3. Note that this individual died over ten years ago, and the FTM CD was issued only last year, "V110_05V2". If one person is missing, how many others?

Search results are presented as "So-and-so and spouse" However, the "spouse" of those results may or may not be the "spouse" indicated in your file. The number of false hits is increased exponentially because of this.

NEHGS Register viewer

The software supplied with this 9 CD set of 148 years (1847-1994) of The New England Historic Genealogical Society's publication, The Register, was supplied by Brøderbund®. This software is apparently a modified version of the FTM program, exhibiting the following problems:

  1. The viewer is incompatible with FTM. One cannot be invoked without first closing the other. This makes it impossible to transcribe data directly from the CDs into FTM.
  2. The viewer takes over the file associations for the FTM file types FTW, FBC, etc. After using one of these CDs, a click on an FTM file re-invokes the NEHGS viewer! One must invoke the FTM program directly to allow it to recapture the associations.
  3. The "search carry-over" which is supposed to continue your search from the index CD to one of the data CDs does not work. Furthermore, there is no way to continue the same search on the next data volume indicated from the index search.
  4. The zoom controls need some intermediate settings. The preset detents give images which are either too large or too small.
