Family Tree Maker (TM) FAQ 002
Why does FTM persist in indexing Uncle Fred by his middle name?

FTM has built into it knowledge of certain compound name forms where the "middle" name is really supposed to be part of the surname. Martin Van Buren, is a good example. FTM takes the surname to be "Van Buren", and that is the way you will see it indexed. Other forms are shown below. If this is not what you intended, you can explicitly show FTM the surname by surrounding it with back slashes: Frederick Van \Johnson\ (otherwise, FTM will assume the surname to be "Van Johnson". The backslashes will not appear in any reports; you will only see them on the data entry Family Page.

Because of the inconsistencies — St. but not Ste., Mac but not Fitz, Delos but not Dos — it is probably a Good Idea to use the backslashes with all compound names rather than try to memorize the above table.
