Welcome to my Moore Issues Page. This is where I will put forward ideas, both my own and others', that may resolve some of our long term problems and make this a better world in which to live.
This site will always be under construction.
During his State of the Union Address, President Clinton urged the beginning of a national debate about the best way to save the Social Security Trust Fund from bankruptcy and to ensure that it will still be solvent when we "Baby Boomers" retire.
As a Baby Boomer, I'm concerned with whether or not the Social Security Trust Fund will still be solvent by the time I retire, or whether the only ways to keep Social Security afloat will be to cut the benefits I have been paying for all of my working life, betraying the premise and the promise of the Social Security Act, or to tax our children and grandchildren more and more just so I can enjoy my retirement. Not only is that not fair to our descendants, but such moves could cause the complete loss of trust in the Social Security System that we need if it is to survive.
I have written a paper,More Money for Social Security Without Raising Taxes or Cutting Benefits, using the worst case scenarios, unlike the commission that recently studied this problem and could not come to a definitive conclusion using only the moderate scenarios, the Moore Proposal shows how the Social Security Trust Fund would not only be solvent through 2070, but would provide enough extra income to pay off the entire U.S. federal debt, without increasing taxes or cutting benefits. Follow this link to read my plan, then use the links from there to get more information and to write to our elected officials to encourage them to give this plan their full consideration.
I have received a response to the Social Security Paper from a member of the Concord Coalition. I have responded to the very legitimate concerns that she and a number of others may have with my proposal. I hope I answered her questions and addressed the concerns she and others have had.
You can go to my links page, where you can go to obtain more information about the long term prospects for Social Security, and write to your elected representatives to express your opinions.
Many of our inner city regions have become bombed out ghettos, with high crime, high unemployment, infant mortality rates rivalling third world countries, poorly educated students coming out of the school systems, and little hope for the people who must endure this. Welfare reform will hurt many of these people living in these areas because it will be very difficult for them to obtain the good paying jobs they need if they are to emerge from the welfare rolls due to their lack of training and education. I have put forward a plan, called Rebuilding our Inner Cities, Financing the Rebuilding of our Inner Cities and Infrastructure, which with a one time start up grant, will pay for itself while providing on the job training in the building trades for welfare recipients and the hard core unemployed while rehabilitating the abandoned houses that scar so many of these neighborhoods.
Although official statistics show that the crime rate has been decreasing over the past few years, many people still consider the crime problem to be one of our most serious problems. With one of the highest percentages of its population imprisoned in the world, and one of the few remaining industrial countries to still have capital punishment, crime remains a serious problem in the United States. With these types of statistics, the United States can no longer be considered the "Land of Liberty" we once were. The way our elected officials have been dealing with the crime problem has not worked, and has destroyed far too many people's lives and wasted far too many resources in the process. I have written a paper called A Way to Deal With the Crime Problem where I propose an alternative idea to what hasn't worked for the past 50 years. This plan should significantly reduce the crime problem in this country, and provide help to those who have been committing many of these crimes, people who have serious drug problems.
Frontline had a very interesting documentary on the U.S. government's war on marijuana and some of the tragic effects of the government's misguided policies on people and their families. Check out Frontline to learn more about some nonviolent offenders who are sentenced to more time in prison than people who commit murder, rape or child abuse. So much for American justice.
I, at least, am trying to put forward some ideas that will address some of our long term problems. That is more than I can say about Congress, which is caught up in a spirit of voyeuristic moralism, to our detriment. I have written a short commentary about what is happening in Washington. I hope you'll read it and let me know what you think.
I hope this page will always be under construction, because we can never have enough ideas for resolving our problems. I hope to eventually have forms where visitors to my pages can leave their comments for others to read and comment on. Through this, I hope we may be able to start solving some of the problems that have been plaguing our society.
