1. Hamilton SLOUGH was born about 1828 in Kentucky. He died
on 16 Aug 1882 in Pioche, Nevada. Hamilton Slough's Obituary from the Pioche Weekly
Record, September 2, 1882
On the morning of the 27th ultimo the people of Bristol were shocked at hearing of the
death of Hamilton Slough, an old and respected resident of this place. The circumstances
attendant of the case were these: Deceased, who was stopping with Mr. Bassett in the cabin
of the latter, retired during the night of the 26th, in good spirits and apparently in his
average state of health, which, by the by, had not been rugged for the past several years,
Mr. Slough occupying one bed in the room and Mr. Bassett the other. Mr. Bassett slept
soundly during the night and was eventually awakened by the 6 o'clock morning whistle of
the furnace. Upon speaking to Slough and informing him that it was time to get up, Bassett
receiving no reply, went to the bed where Slough lay for the purpose of arousing him and
found him dead. Deceased lay in a natural position, with eyes closed as if sleeping, and
had evidently passed away without struggle. He was born in Kentucky, served in the Mexican
War, and was 63 years of age at the time of his death. The Funeral took place on the 27th.
Coroner Fogg held an inquest on the body and the jury rendered a verdict of death from
natural causes.
Hamilton was a private in the 4th Regiment, Company G, Monore County, Indiana and fought
in the Mexican War. He was mustered in on June 14, 1847 at Jeffersonville by Captain R. C.
Gatlin and was mustered out on July 16, 1848 at Madison, Indiana by Major Goff.
Priscilla died when Robert Edward was very young. Hamilton left Robert with the Daniel M.
Ingersoll family and went west to the gold mines to find his fortune and never returned.
In the 1860 Tuolumme County, CA census there is a H. Slough enumerated with a J. R. Blake
and they are both miners. It has his age as thirty one and born in Pennsylvania. With the
age being correct, I believe this to be Hamilton.
In the 1870 Storey County, Nevada census there is again a H. Slough enumerated with a
Joseph Bish, his wife and several other men. Joseph is a salon keeper and all the men are
miners. I believe Hamilton moved from Big Oak Flat, California to Gold Hill Nevada.
In the 1880 Lincoln County, Nevada census Hamilton is again a miner and it shows that both
of his parents are from North Carolina.
Hamilton died in Bristol, Lincoln County, Nevada. The year that Hamilton died, 1882,
Bristol had five stores, eight saloons, two hotels with restaurants attached, numerous
other shops and businesses and 'more prospective millionaires than any other camp of
comparable size'. Bristol has been a ghost town for many decades.
He was married to Priscilla Ann CAMPBELL on 26 Jul 1849 in Monroe County,
Indiana.(1)
Priscilla Ann CAMPBELL was born about 1829 in Indiana. She died about
1851 in Greene County, Indiana. Hamilton SLOUGH and Priscilla Ann CAMPBELL had the
following children:
+2 i. Robert Edward (Ed) SLOUGH Sr.
