1. Joseph1 Baker was born in Bavaria, Germany Apr 2 1819. Joseph died Sept 26,1885 in Indianna,Pa, at 66 years of age.
He married Hanna Piffer. Hanna was born in Carlisle,Pa unknown. Hanna died abt 1896 in Indianna,Pa. Everyone who knew her loved this short, very round, pipe smoking, jolly lady. She lived on the White Twp Farm with her son Bill after Joe died Stories of Joseph Baker are scarce because he died before the turn of the century, but Charles Baker remembers his father telling that Joe was so proud of having been in the German Cavalry, however reluctently he was conscripted, that he refused to drive a team from behind. Joe thought the proper place for a man to sit was on a horse, not behind it.
It seems he was also fond of showing off his skill with a sabre. He believed a man on a mount was superior to a foot soldier and enjoyed proving it by jousting with a man on the ground, while he was sitting on a fence. he usually won the contest and the argument!
Naturalization Papers were issued to Joseph Baker in Oct 1852. He was living in White Twp., Ind. Co. State of Pa (Nat Papers No. 494)
Josopeh Baker was a wagonmaker and carpenter and like everyone else of the day, a sometime farmer. He and Hanna lived for awhile in White Twp on a farm deeded to Hanna.
Hanna and Joe are buried at St. Bernards on the Clymer Rd, Indiana, Pa
