O blessed home where man and wife
Together lead a godly life,
By deeds their faith confessing!
There many a happy day is spent,
There Jesus gladly will consent
To tarry with His blessing.
Amen.

FORWARD

Historical Background

Illinois became a State in 1818, the first settler arrived in Sangamon County in 1817, and "Springfield" boasted a store and a few residents by 1821. The first Lutheran congregation in Springfield was organized in 1841, the nearest other Lutheran congregations at that time being at Hillsboro in the southwest, Quincy in the west, and Addison in the north. The first church members were English speaking, coming from the eastern states. By 1854, there were so many German Lutheran members that the congregation split into two parts: German (Trinity) and English (Grace).

Records, Sources

Church records for the years 1841-1854 have not been found. We have used Rev. Springer's own clerical records book, of which only half of the pages survive, for the period, and the "minutes" books held by Grace Lutheran Church, in which only six marriages are mentioned. After 1851, the records of Trinity Lutheran Church are the source of these marriage records. The extent to which the German Language was used in the records depends on the minister at the time, as does the form and content. Many pages of the old records are badly faded, deteriorated, hard to read.

Accuracy

Great care was taken to avoid errors and to produce a copy that would reflect the original record in spelling and data. The typed material was checked many times. Names that appear only once are at times especially difficult to decipher. The index will lead the researcher to the various spellings of some of the surnames.

The following list includes the names of the Lutheran Ministers that probably officiated at most of the marriage in this record:
