TEMPERANCE

SELF-CONTROL

In the New Testament, "Temperance" means "self-control". This is where we get the shortened modern-day word "temper"; as in, "he lost his temper" which means "he lost his self-control (temperance)". This is usually applied when someone breaks forth in Anger or rage revealing his Old Sin Nature and that "Temperance" is not present.

Self-control covers many more areas than just Anger, however. It is also Moral. All "the flesh" is to be brought into subjection: into Obedience to the Spirit that now Dwells within us.

OBEDIENCE IN THE SPIRIT

The Law (Torah, the Old Covenant) demands outward obedience above all. The New Covenant demands Inward Obedience evan in a stricter manner than the Law ever did.

[1] Note From the Genva Bible:

5:23 Meekness, temperance: {17} against such there is no law.

(17) Lest that any man should object that Paul plays the deceiver, as one who urging the Spirit urges nothing but that which the Law commands, he shows that he requires not that literal and outward obedience, but spiritual, which proceeds not from the Law but from the Spirit of Christ, who gives us new birth, and must and ought to be the ruler and guider of our life.
