But as He which hath Called you is Holy, so be ye Holy in all manner of conversation; I Peter 1:15
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all Holy Conversation and G-dliness,
I Peter 3:11
One chief identifying characteristic of those who are carnal or are "in the world" is their manner of speech. They use carnal means, "double meanings" and "suggestive talk" which is not in Righteousness. They may call this "humor", "being the life of the party", "fun to be around", "sophistication" or "wittiness". This passes for "entertainment" in "the world", and in many circles, those who are most adept at it become the most "popular".
The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good. Psalms 36:3
The Apostle Paul also warns about speech.
Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Roman 3:13
THE TONGUE MUST BE BRIDLED
The Apostle James rightly says that the tongue is naturally the source of much evil. King David said the poison of asps is under it. Bridling the tongue and not permitting it to speak in carnal ways is of tremendous benefit and reward both now and Eternally.
THE CARNAL AND THE UNSAVED CANNOT CONTROL THEIR TONGUE
But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. James 3:8
The Apostle James is telling us here that the tongue cannot be tamed by man or any of his efforts. "The world" certainly does not seek to do so. We are to "escape the corruption of the world because of lust." The only way that the tongue can be tamed is by G-d Working within His Elect to do so. Philippians 2:13.
No unsaved person can ever fully attain unto this, and no carnal person even wants to; he would surrender his "worldly popularity" and power over others of like mind if he did so. This does not leave much room for "comedians".
Many times, those "of the world" will use the tongue to seduce. They are seduced themselves, and seek to draw others into a web of spiritual adultery.[1] "Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather, reprove them". Reprove them by demonstrating your Pureness of Speech.
DEPART FROM INIQUITY
If anyone has failed in the past, it does not mean they cannot fully Overcome in this area.[2]
For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. Proverbs 24:16
Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: Galatians 4:3
Recognizing the problem is crucial. Addressing it fully by using I John 1:9 and Righteous speech in all areas of life is our Noble Goal in His Kingdom.
OUR SPEECH IS TO BE HOLY
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Ephesians 4:29
He that loveth pureness of heart, for the Grace of his lips the King shall be his friend. Proverbs 22:11
According as His Divine Power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and G-dliness, through the Knowledge of Him that hath Called us to Glory and Virtue: II Peter 1:3
Our Holiness of Conversation must set us apart from all others. These things apply as well to the Single Believer and to Married Believers, whether publically or privately.
WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. Matthew 12:36
Let Today be the Day that the People of G-d depart from all impure speech.
