~Site Of The Day~

The New Homemaker
(3-09-01)

The New Homemaker is a site with excellent articles on saving money ("Living Below Your Means"), cleaning ("Vinegar: (Almost) the Only Cleaner You'll Ever Need"), and crafts and decorating ("Turning Garbage into Gold"). The amount of information contained here is truly remarkable, not only in its depth, but its presentation. If you are a homemaker, or domestic engineer, or know one, then this site is for you, or for them. Bookmark it, and be sure to pass it along.

AgameAday
(2-19-01)

AgameAday is an educational site that attempts to stimulate learning, problem solving, and creative thinking through the use of games and puzzles. There are both interactive online ones, and printable ones as well. There is a new one for every day of the month, such as Birthday Anagrams, Mixed Doubles, and Zoo's Who. There is a special section called the Labyrinth, which is a different maze to solve every day.

This is an interesting site that can help struggling students to improve their skills, and help other students to pass the time constructively. Enjoy your stop here today, and pass it on to a friend.

Parenthood Web
(2-09-01)

Parenthood Web is a site that helps provide information for parents of any age. It is not an online magazine, it is not a collection of links, but is a grouping of topics that each parent should be aware of. The main page has a search engine that allows browsing selected areas or searching for a specific keyword. The topic areas are seemingly endless, covering everything from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to Scoliosis to Allowances to Pregnancy. Each topic has several articles about it, and some are polls asking opinions. There is an impressive list of professionals that publish on this site, and you can access them by using the Ask The Pros area. I looked up one on the strain that ADHD children can put on a marriage, and it was an informative topic, as our son has that disorder. There is also an online library and bookstore here.

Any help we parents can get in raising our children is a godsend. Try this site out. It is so varied and deep in the topics it covers, you will surely find something here.

Kids Health at the AMA
(8-07-00)

Kids Health at the AMA is where you will find all sorts of resources about children and babies. Their development as they grow, such as when should a baby start to walk, is in an area called Your Baby's Development. There is a section on Safety and Accident Prevention, both in the home and in the car. A section on Childhood Infections was most interesting to me. It talks about germs, infections, immunizations, the list goes on. The reports and articles presented here are written for the layperson to understand. So don't think you have to think like a physician to understand this page.

This site is best used before something happens. I am not suggesting that if your child has an accident to run to this website and find out how to deal with it. What I am suggesting is that as a parent you read it, to gain some of the knowledge about common everyday health items that relate to your children. You owe it to yourself, and more importantly, you owe it to them.

Lives, the Biography Resource
(4-24-00)

Lives, the Biography Resource claims to be the largest guide to biographical sites on the Internet. At first glance, it lives up to its claim quite well. There are hundreds of online biographies that are available for reading and printing out for off line use. Learn about Yuri Gagarin, Carl Sagan, Bud Abbott and Bella Abzug. Each listing takes a visitor to a site about that person. You can also look up biographies by collections such as profession (art, science, etc.), geographical regions (everywhere from Alabama to New Zealand and the lower east side of New York), and special classifications such as African American History and Women's History.

This is a varied and interesting site. It is an excellent reference for a student, and for the casual reader who is interested in learning more about history and the personalities involved. Be sure to bookmark it and return often.

50states.com

From Alabama to Wyoming, 50states.com is packed with information and links about all 50 states and capitols. In addition to the usual trivia like state birds, flowers, songs, mottos, and nicknames, it helps you find local graves, Webcams, tax forms, real estate, and pen pals. It's also great for looking up quick facts.

Childfun.com
(3-20-00)

ChildFun.com is a site that is dedicated to parents, children, childcare and daycare providers, preschool teachers and early childhood educators. It is an invaluable resource for ideas, games, activities, nutrition, and parenting information. For example, there is an article for making popsicles for only pennies a day (instead of paying that ice cream truck that always seems to stop by), or a recipe for making edible play dough. There is such a variety of information available here it is hard to list them all in just a few lines. Suffice to say, this is a site that any parent, teacher, or day care provider needs to bookmark.

Can't get there from here? Think again. Thanks to Mapquest, the excuse "I got lost" is quickly losing validity. The site is very simple, and your choices are clear. Jigzone
(3-12-00)

Jigzone is the grand daddy of online jigsaw puzzle sites. They have a huge inventory of Java puzzles at all levels of difficulty, feature a new picture daily, and allow you to email puzzles to friends. But what I liked best was being able to control both the number of pieces and their shape. For example, start with their puzzle of the day. Is the sixty-seven piece classic a tad too difficult or perhaps too easy? Click on Shapes and choose your own level of difficulty from among thirty-three choices, ranging from a six-piece classic (preschool easy) to 240 square pieces (for serious puzzle enthusiasts only!)

Barbecue'n
(3-11-00)

The smell of a ragin' barbecue on a hot summer night is one of the reasons many people claim they can't become vegetarians. Whether you're wet behind the ears when it comes to the great outdoor activity or a seasoned charbroiler, Barbecue'n has something for you. Not sure what cut of meat to grab at the market? Take a look at the cut guide and rating system. If a recipe's what you're after, Barbecue'n has 'em by the dozen. The role spices play in a barbecue is examined as well. No longer will you think that a barbecue means simply throwing a burger on the grill.
