How To Choose a "Good" Veterinarian
Choosing a veterinarian is one of the most important decisions that
you will ever make about your pet's health. There are no specific rules
but here are some points that you should consider:
-
Ask friends or people you know who take good care of their pets for a recommendation.
Look for a veterinarian at a clinic that specializes in the type of pet
that you have.
-
Be sure your veterinarian is someone you and your pet can establish a rapport
with and find it easy to talk to. If for any reason you don't feel comfortable,
simply find another veterinarian. There are lots out there.
-
Make sure that you have sufficient time to talk to the veterinarian and
they take the time to explain things using terms that you can understand.
Ask about anything that it not clear.
-
The best way to evaluate a veterinarian through an initial office visit.
Make sure you see the doctor personally and that the assistants are capable
and use a minimum of restraint on nervous animals.
-
Not only the first time you visit but each time thereafter, a thorough
physical should be performed and you should be asked questions regarding
your pet's background and medical history. At each appointment after that,
you should be asked for any updates or changes in your pet's health.
-
The clinic should be clean, bright, and free of any offensive odors. The
staff should be friendly, courteous, and caring.
-
Discuss the matter of fees before any procedure.
-
A good veterinarian recognizes their limitations and will make referrals
when necessary.
-
Be sure to choose a veterinarian at a clinic that provides emergency care
24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Find out what services are available NOW
while your pet is healthy so that you won't have to waste valuable time
when an emergency arises.
