The Cricket and the Snake

One fine day a group of young crickets were playing , as crickets often do, when they heard the call from the old wise cricket of their group. They were being summoned for their daily lesson and they scurried away to get to the appointed spot. Once there, they sat and listened as the old cricket told them of the dangers of the world. " Now be most careful of the snake my little ones, for he is your enemy, of that have no doubt." Upon hearing this, a rather contemptuous young lad piped up and voiced his disagreement. " Just the other day I came across a snake, what a docile thing it is, it just laid there and paid no attention to me at all." Having said his piece and not allowing anyone to comment he yelled to his friends as he departed the group, " this is a waste of time and I have better things to do. " Off he went, carefree and happy, bounding over the twigs and leaves that lay before him. Life was wonderful and he chirped and frolicked as he went. Back at the gathering the old cricket just shook his head, " foolish young fellow ", he sighed, " he has much to learn, I just hope he learns it before it is too late. " " The snake like most creature, eats when he's hungry and no doubt our young fellows luck was with him on that day, for the snake was surely full. "

As things would have it, the young cricket again crossed the path of the snake, who was coiled near a stump and partially hidden by leaves. Being sure and full of himself, he not only approached, but jumped directly in front of the snake who promptly dispatched him and returned to its resting position.

All of my stories and poems have a moral to them, however it would be presumptuous of me to assert my views on the matter....................so, here are a few choices, any one of which could be right in your view..... It's totally up to you.

Poor foolish cricket, not only tempted fate but challenged it.
Choose that moral which best suits your fancy.
