"Wow! What a great place," you think to yourself as you walk down the tropical beach, "Sure the sand might be a little hot, and the sun slightly roasting, but over all this is a great place." Lining the shore is a thick tropical jungle, which even if it is a little scary and humid, contains a great variety of creatures and plants. You hope that none of them are too dangerous. Towering above the jungle is a volcano-it seems to be dormant, but you can never be to sure.
All these morbid thoughts start to overwhelm you as you look around nervously for some sign of sapient life. You start running down the beach, certain that you are being followed by a great jungle cat who is coming closer and closer, and any second now will sink it's claws into your shoulders and drag you down to. Luckily you spot a habitation, not a 5 star hotel, but at least it offers some protection against the dangers that lurk on the island. And maybe you'll find someone inside who can help you.
Well, there's someone inside, and she seems amused at your breathless, tired state. "A little paranoid are we?" the girl's voice is unable to hide her laughter. "I'm Eve, the one human inhabitant of the island. I use to be like that, but a couple months here helped. Not that aren't somethings to be afraid of," her face darkens a little, but instead of describing them-you're not sure you want to hear more about them anyway-she asks you, "Why are you here? This isn't a very popular place."
You tell her and then ask, "If it's so dangerous, why are you here?"
"I was shipwrecked here, and it grew on me so that I couldn't leave it even when I got a chance. The ship I was on was caught in a storm during my first voyage as a crew member on the Apple, a merchant ship, when the storm really intense I fell off the side into a whirlpool of light. I later learned that it was a portal to the Mista Haven, right on to this island, which is part of a chain south of the main land mass. I woke up on this island 9 months ago. My family had lived in a very isolated part of our country and I knew how to take care of myself. Not that I didn't make mistakes, but after a while I got used to life here.
3 months ago a dragon, Hearth, was flying over the island and saw this hut. When she landed I was so scared, where I come from there were no dragons, but now we're good friends. I decided to stay here, and we're thinking of setting up a village here. Hearth flies in once a week for supplies and stuff."
You comment that she certainly has had a interesting life, to which she smiles, "I'd hate to live a 'normal' life, there's no fun. That's why I had signed up on the Apple. Well that's my life story so far. Except for one thing. I applied for a Dayen from the Land of Kae, and I was Chosen be a white female named Jae"
"Dayens? What are Dayens?"
"Here, this is the information I got when I was given Jae:"
Eve hands you a paper that reads:
"Dayens are an engineered species. They have many different features from several different species, which include the horse, camel, and antelope. They were created using a bit of magic and because of it they are a lot more intelligent than the average beasts of burden they are supposed to be. This extra intelligence makes them imprint on other sentient species.
They come in six different colors. Three of them are distinctly female: (listed in order of rank) white, chocolate, and sandy. The other three are mostly male: gray, tan, and black. There are sometimes spotted or stripped ones, but they are very rare.
Dayens are vegetarians. They prefer grass and oats, and an apple now and then. Strange dayens can rarely be found eating meat (their genetics sometimes do odd things) but they usually get kinda sick afterwards."
"Jae is now a juvenile, would you like to meet her?"
You nod, and Eve turns down the beach and shouts, "Jae, come here. I want you to met someone."
Jae
Jae looks at you, and then at Eve and you get the impression that they are talking to one another. Suddenly Eve laughs and Jae walks over to a plate of apples that was set on a small table. "Not too many Jae, you wouldn't want to gain any MORE weight would you?"
Although you miss Jae's scathing reply, you get the sense that she is not really deeply offended, that the trading of insults is like a game for them.
"If you want I could call Health to take you back, she gave me this magic stone that I can use to summon her," She shows you the smooth blue stone with orange swirls hanging from her neck on a silver-colored chain. You nod and she rubs the stone and whispers something too softly for you to hear. In a few seconds you do hear something, a voice outside speaking, "Hello Eve, Jae, what's the matter?" a blue/orange head sticks itself through the door, "who's that?"
"Hearth, this is my visitor. Could you take him/her back to the main land?"
"If I must, but I'm NOT a camel or donkey, I don't go transporting people everywhere just cause they ask me to," Hearth seems to be slightly annoyed
"Of course not Hearth, but who else is strong enough to fly here? Issuth isn't strong enough to take 2 people, and she'd have to take Drai with her. And the twins are too small. And..." Eve seems to know how to deal with her friend and you leave the talking to her.
"Alright, I get your point. I'll take um," Hearth says sulkily.
"Thanks, Hearth. Goodbye visitor."
