Note: Dedicated To Roxann Kate! We Met Long Ago By: Julia Kirby TOM'S POV Chapter 1 Meeting Her I remember that Kessik was hot. Very hot. The green rolling hills against a pale blue sky would be captured in my mind for what seemed like forever. The land went on and on for miles. As far as you could see. Though in the distance there was an orange blob. That was the desert. That's where the heat came from. I could feel the shuttle land, engage the landing protocals, and come to a halt. I opened my eyes to see my father sitting across from me, glaring. He was still upset that I hadn't been studying on the way to Kessik. It wasn't my fault. We had had a non-stop 3 day trip here from Earth. I was tired and I wanted to sleep. So I had. And my father was upset now. But what else was new? Dad and I didn't have a very good relationship. He always expected too much out of me. I had to be perfect. I had to excell in every bit of school and sports. I was on 7 sport teams. I was in classes that were way to hard for me. I went to bed just as the sun rose every morning. And I was supposed to be perfect? I was used to it by now. All my 15 years Dad had pushed me. It was just never good enough for him. I wished someone would understand. I really wish someone could. The shuttle had finished landing and the ramp was coming down. I got up and stretched. I had been sitting down for 4 hours. My neck was stiff and I had to go to the bathroom. My father was still sitting there, glaring at me. I didn't say anything. I just walked toward the exit. Kessik was even more beautiful on the outside then the inside. The sun beat down on me, instantly warming me. I might want to put on some sun block. I heard my father come up behind me and gave me a shove. I stumbled down the ramp and landed with a thump at the bottom. I got up, dejectedly and followed my father toward the hotel we would be staying at. The street our hotel was on was the main one. It didn't look like the main one. It looked like the same as all the rest I had seen on our way in. Plane brown houses lined the street, and I saw a bigger building at the end of the road that looked like a school. I checked my chronometer. It was almost 3:00. School would be ending soon. Maybe I would walk down there and see if I could meet someone. I would need to hurry and unpack. "Thomas! Stop day dreaming and come on!" I heard my father yell at me. I turned and followed him into the hotel. ************************************************************************ A half hour later I was finally free. My father had made me unpack all my stuff before I could go explore. He was off to a meeting at the Star Fleet base her on Kessik. That's why we are here. I don't know why he had to bring me along. He never has before. He always thought I would get in the way or I would say the wrong things. So why did he bring me along this time? I stepped back out onto the bare street and started walking toward the school. It hadn't let out yet, I was glad. If I was going to be here for 2 weeks, I might as well meet some people. I reached, what looked to be, the main gate. Little kids were starting to rush out and down the street. They looked all human. They just sort of looked at me strangely and kept on going out. I wondered when the older kids would be coming. Well, I didn't wonder long. Another bell rang and kids my age came out of classes. They didn't come charging out like the other children. I noticed a circle of girls. I stiffened. The girls reguarded me at a distance. Probably checking me out. I don't really think I need checking out. I am not that good looking, at least I don't think I am. I have very blonde hair, but not the kind that is almost white. My hair looks highlighted and it is sort of curly. I am very tall for my age, and I have a lot of muscle, for my father makes me take weight lifting. I think it is my eyes that draw me to people though. My eyes are weird. They are the most icey shade of blue. Around the edges it is a silvery color. My mother used to tell me that my eyes betrayed my emotion. Once when I was 12 years old a friend of my parents came to visit us. She brought with her, a daughter. Her daughter's name was Lullani. I immediatley like her. My mom knew it too. Later, after they had gone, I asked how. She said my eyes. They showed it and they also show almost every other emotion, it seems. But just 3 months ago, mom passed away. I don't talk about her much. No one does. Dad doesn't seem to care. He didn't even attend the funeral. I don't think he even loved her. She was just his slave. Nothing more, nothing less. The girls must have thought I was okay looking for they started coming toward me. I stood up from where I had been sitting, and brushed myself off. I brushed the hair out of my face, and hoped that I didn't have a stupid grin on my face. I serveyed the girls. They must have been the popular crowd. They all had their hair done perfectly, and were wearing the latest fashions. There was 3 of them, huddled around one of them. I think she was their leader. They stopped about 2 feet in front of me. The leader smiled. She had black hair and looked of oriental ancestry. Her eyes were almond shaped and she had dark skin. The girl on the right of the leader was a lot shorter then I was. She had short, red hair and plenty of freckles. Her eyes wer a hazel color. The girl on the left was very tall and very plain. She had brown hair and brown eyes. She was as skinny as a slice of paper. "Hello. Are you new here to Kessik?" Her voice was deep and rich. It reminded me of chocolate pudding. "Well, I am hear on a trip with my father. I'm Tom Paris.." I said, introducing myself. "I'm Valentina Garmond. This is Godvia Jasper." She said motioning to the girl on her right. "And this is Eudora Jeff." She said motioning to the one on the left. "Please to meet you. I am staying her with my father, Admiral Paris, for two weeks. Thought I could find some friends." "Well, you have come to the right place." She was interupted by a tap on her shoulder. Valentina turned around. A boy stood there, my age maybe a little older. Valentina looked annoyed. "What do you want, Bentley?" Valentina asked annoyed. The boy, Bentley, looked taken back. "We were going to go for a walk." He said slowly. "No we weren't. Go away now." Valentina said, dismissing him. She turned back toward me. "Sorry for that interuption. He is delusional." I nodded and eyed the guy's retreating back. "Well, I really should be going. My father wanted me back about 10 minutes ago." I said. All three of the girls looked disappointed though. "Is there somewhere I can meet you later?" I asked. "Oh, just meet us outside the hotel in about 2 hours. Will that work?" Valentina said, sweetly. "Uh...sure." I said, and turned. I walked back to the hotel feeling a lot better. If only I knew that someone was watching me.... Comments to frostyu@geocities.com
