Cartwright Cougarsphere

Advised by the best aliens available!

You have found the Cartwright Cougarsphere site. Welcome!

We submitted a grant proposal to Salt River Project Teacher Venture Grants committee in the spring of 1997. We were granted $1200 for one 2nd grade, one 4th grade, and one 6th grade class to work together to create an entry for the 1998 NASA Space Settlement Contest.

We heard on May 5, 1998, that we have placed 3rd out of 147 international entries in the contest. Needless to say, we are thriled. Here is a summary of the proposal, as submitted:

CARTWRIGHT COUGARSPHERE
CARTWRIGHT STUDENTS HAVE GONE WHERE NO STUDENTS HAVE GONE BEFORE!

PURPOSE

The CARTWRIGHT COUGARSPHERE project transported the students of Cartwright Elementary School into the high frontier of deep space. The students became citizens of the first international orbiting space station. Through a cooperative integrated approach, the participants researched, designed, and built a habitat that would meet all the needs of its citizens in deep space. All the physical, social, cultural, economic, and recreational necessities of the space station inhabitants were taken into consideration.

PROCEDURE

*space scenario writing contest
*Biosphere 2 Trip
*cooperative research, design, and space station construction
*research and creation of a hydroponic farm
*creation of the social, cultural, recreational, and economic necessities
*web page displaying progress
*participation in NASA AMES Space Settlement Contest
*organization of school-wide space celebration

STUDENT BENEFITS

This project enriched the day-to-day experience of Cartwright1s students in a multitude of ways.

*reading sources of information not specifically written for children
*writing professional documentation
*learning basic computer skills
*utilizing the Internet and computer software in obtaining information
*learning about new and exciting careers
