The Andalites Return
by pemcorgi@home.com

The war with the Yeerks was over, and it had been for 112 years. In all that time, the Andalites had never come to Earth. No one knew why. Humans were now one of the greatest races in all known space. They had discovered how to make a ship that could fly as fast as light, but only used tiny amounts of fuel. They could make androids almost as powerful as the Chee. They were so powerful that, even though the Andalites didn't like to admit it, humans were almost more powerful than Andalites.
Almost.
Now, the Andalites were coming. Coming to Earth.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Chapter One~
<Prince Aliri-Liriss-Jatath to the bridge,> came the captain's voice. This must have been the fifth time the captain thought he saw Earth. As I passed one of the arisths, he made a face at me and snorted. Some people just wouldn't accept female warriors, since they had only been introduced to Andalite society nine years ago. I glared at the aristh. Then I continued to the battle bridge.
Inside, the captain was glancing from his maps to the outside.
<Captain?> I asked him.
<Prince Aliri, you're here,> said the captain. <I believe we may have finally reached Earth.>
<Are you sure?>
<Yes.>
<I thought the humans lived on land. But this planet appears to be mainly liquid,> I told the captain.
<We are looking on one of the wet sides. There is land on this planet, and the humans live there. I'm going to try landing.>
<All right. I hope you don't land in the wrong place, or the humans may attack. Crushing one of their buildings is considered an offence on this planet.>
<Prince Aliri, you may return to the dome.>
I started back up to the dome. When I reached it, I looked outside. There was the strange blue planet. I went back to my quarters and pulled out my book about humans, by Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthil. Strange. They walked on two legs without a tail? Impossible. I'd have to see for myself.
Suddenly an announcement was made. <Landing on Earth in five minutes.>
~Chapter Two~
Five minutes later, we had landed in front of an old building. My book about humans had told me they called it "the White House." I ran to the hatch, nearly knocking over the aristh who had insulted me earlier. Five other princes, the T.O., the captain, and I were all crowded into the little pressurisation chamber. The hatch opened. The captain was the first to step out onto the green grass outside. The T.O. came after him, followed by the other princes and I. Humans were gathered around us, and some of them were staring at us.Others spoke, using mouth-sounds. I was mostly looking forward to cinnamon buns. Aximili had written many times about how wonderful they were.
<Hello, humans,> I said. <I am Prince Aliri-Liris-Jatath.>
"Hello, Andalites. Welcome to Earth," said one man standing nearby. I had heard he was the U.S. president. I would have to ask him what a U.S. president was later.
The crowds parted so we could get through. I ran out of the crowd. Earth grass wasn't bad, really. But then I saw some of humans' greatest creations (according to Aximili).
Cinnamon buns!
I found quite a few humans who would let me acquire them. I performed a Frolis Maneuver and began to morph a human.
My tail shrunk and my stalk eyes were sucked into my head. My fur disappeared. Now my skin was a peach color. A mouth appeared. It felt like a wound to me. I reared up on my hind legs as my forelegs disappeared. This part was tricky and I almost fell over. Then my legs became human. Soon I was fully human and I pulled on some of the artificial skin and hooves they called "clothing."
I walked slowly over to the human selling the buns.
"May I have a cinnamon bun? Un?" I asked her, speaking with a human mouth.
"Are you an Andalite?" she asked me, smiling.
"Yes. Es. Yes-suh," I replied.
"Welcome to Earth. Here you go." She handed me an enormous bun. I crammed it into my mouth. It was even better than Aximili had said! It was indescribable! Then I remembered another food. The brown globules called chocolate. I tried those, too. Not as good as the cinnamon bun, but still delicious.
Then I walked unsteadily to the humans' McDonalds.
I looked around. Then I noticed a door marked with some human symbols. It said "Employees Only." What was an employee? Aximili had never mentioned employees in his book. I opened the door to find out what an employee was. Strangely, the attendants ignored me. There were stairs leading down. I felt a little nervous about going down these stairs with human legs, but I continued anyway. What I saw scared me more than anything I had ever seen.
It was a huge room. Some humans were in cages. In the very centre was a pool of grey liquid.
A Yeerk pool.
~Chapter Three~
I ran out of it, tripping a few times. How could humans be so powerful when they only had two legs? That was totally unimportant now, though. I had to find the captain and warn him. The Yeerks were back!
I ran faster and began morphing. Once I had my Andalite legs back, I felt a lot steadier. I ran even faster and started trying to use private thought-speech to the captain.
<Captain Saridor! Can you hear me? The Yeerks are back!> I shouted.
Soon I heard the captain's voice, faint but audible. <Prince Aliri? Is that you?>
<Yes! I'm in front of the Cinnabon,> I replied. All of the Andalites on Earth knew the location of the Cinnabon.
Soon I caught sight of Captain Saridor rushing toward me. He, too, was in his Andalite form. <Should I warn the humans?> I asked him. <If the Yeerks infest someone who knows of human technology, all will be lost.>
<Go ahead!>
So I screamed a message for everyone to hear. <Humans! Go back to your homes! The Yeerks are here and no one is safe!>
Humans began screaming and racing out of the many exits, leaving the mall abandoned, except for nine Andalites crowded in front of the Cinnabon.
Nine? Only eight of us had left the ship. I quickly recounted. Yes, there were definitely nine, one of whom I didn't know. Another Andalite-Controller? Impossible. No Andalites had come to this planet, or even close to it, for 114 years. None but the notorious Visser Three, and he was a Controller who had disappeared years ago. Suddenly an awful thought came into my mind.
Could the Visser have been in bio-stasis the whole time? Everyone knew he had disappeared, but no one knew why. Suddenly I felt absolutely sure of who the unknown Andalite was.
I was standing next to the only Andalite-Controller in history.
I was standing next to Visser Three.
~Chapter Four~
I couldnˇ¦t believe it. Visser Three, alive after so many years? I had to tell the captain.
<Captain Saridor, eight Andalites from our ship are on Earth, but there is a ninth right beside me. I believe he is Visser Three, the Andalite-Controller from many years ago! I think he may have been in bio-stasis the whole time.>
<The Visser? Impossible. Prince Aliri, itˇ¦s probably one of the jealous arisths or warriors who snuck off the ship.>
Suddenly a third voice cut in. It was not the voice of an aristh or warrior. It had a harsh, evil sound. <Your Prince Aliri is right, actually. I'm back, and I have plans. Too bad you Andalites came. You arenˇ¦t part of my plans at all. I guess I have no choice but to destroy you.>
<Visser Three?> said the captain in a voice full of pure hatred.
I arched my tail forward quickly and cut into the Visser. I noticed him thought-speaking too late. A mob of human-Controllers rushed at me and pulled me away. The other Andalites tried to get me back, but there were too many Controllers, each clutching a Dracon beam. Visser Three soon realised how he could get the others away. He took a Dracon beam from one of the human-Controllers and pointed it at my head. A fragrant smell filled the air around me.
Then Visser Three said icily, <Go back to your ship or this Andalite dies.>
The Andalites turned toward the exit. They were beyond the range of thought-speech now. I wanted to tell them it was all a trick. I knew my fate now.
I was going to become a Controller.
~Chapter Five~
Sure enough, the human-Controllers dragged me to the door to the Yeerk pool, the Visser keeping his Dracon beam trained on me all the way. I tried to attack them, but they had put a sheath over my tail blade. The Controllers tied a rope around my legs so I couldn't move. I tried to morph, but I realised the sweet smell had been a drug to keep me from morphing.
We had reached the pool now. I was dragged down the long steel pier, still held against my will. I noticed Visser Three dropping out of his host's head. But why? Then I realised, the Visser wanted my morphing powers. I knew that in his time, you could only stay in morph for two Earth hours. Now you could stay as long as you wished. The Visser must have thought that was so important that he was willing to give up all the fearsome morphs he had collected in his old host. Suddenly I noticed the other Andalite, Alloran-Semitur-Corass, looking around.
<Alloran!> I cried.
<Another Andalite? Here?>
<I'm Prince Aliri-Liris-Jatath. The Yeerks are going to infest me! You have all of the Visser's most dangerous morphs. Morph! Before they infest me!>
<Prince Aliri, I can't possibly morph fast enough.>
<Just MORPH!> I screamed.
Alloran looked at me, pity in his eyes. We both knew it was too late, but he ran over to me anyway, even though he knew he'd be infested again if he was caught.
<Thank you, Alloran,> I said quietly.
<Aliri, I know what it's like to be a Controller. Never lose hope. I'll fight that monster until you are free,> he said.
I was almost at the end of the pier now. I looked at Alloran.
<Look out!> I called. Some human-Controllers were running towards him, to try and re-infest him. Alloran glanced sadly back at me once more and broke into a run. He ran out the door and it swung shut with a thud.
I was at the end of the pier. The Controllers grabbed my head and shoved it into the murky liquid. I felt an intense pain in my head. It was the Yeerk! He was squeezing himself into my head. I hit a human-Controller with my sheathed tail blade, hard. He slumped to the floor. It was my last free movement. I realised it was over. The Yeerk had won, and I was a Controller.
~Chapter Six~
The Yeerk, Visser Three, spoke. <You are mine now, Andalite. YourˇK friendˇK, Alloran, won't come back. I promise you that.> He laughed.
<Don't be so sure of that, Yeerk. Who believes the word of Visser Three?>
<Shut up, slave,> he said.
He made me walk to the ship. He boarded it and headed straight for the bridge. I knew what he was doing.
He went up to the captain and said, <Captain Saridor, I escaped the Yeerks.>
<I'm sorry, Prince Aliri, but we'll have to keep you locked up for three days to be sure.
Visser Three didn't even flinch. He was a good actor, I saw. But was he good enough to fool the captain?
<I'll trick your captain. You Andalites are a race of fools,> the Visser said to me.
<I don't think so, Yeerk. You are a fool to think you can deceive Captain Saridor. He didn't become captain by falling for tricks.>
The Yeerk ignored me and continued talking to the captain. <It would be better for me to return to my duties, wouldn't it, Captain?>
<Right now you don't have any duties, Prince Aliri. We're going back to the homeworld,> said the captain. <We don't want a Yeerk on board, so we have to lock you up. I'm sure you understand.>
Visser Three struck!
The T.O. stared as the captain blocked my tail and sent for some others to help. <Now there's no doubt we have a renegade Yeerk here,> said the T.O.
For the second time that day, my tail was sheathed and I was tied up. The other Andalites dragged me to a room. There were no windows and no crack on the door where I could get out. Grass covered the floor. It was a reasonably large room, so I wasn't claustrophobic. To my amazement, the Visser didn't seem nearly as confident as before. Maybe I would be free after all.
~Chapter Seven~
<You will never be free, Andalite,> Visser Three said calmly.
I ignored him. It was a good idea.
It was obvious Visser Three wanted me to be afraid. I did not fear him any more than I feared a beginning aristh. I knew he could read my thoughts, but the Yeerk ignored this one. I could sense his fear, though. He was obviously afraid there was no way out of here.
It was good to know he was afraid.
<I am not afraid, Andalite,> he said.
<I have a name, Visser, and it's not "Andalite." My name is Aliri-Liris-Jatath, soon to be ex-Controller.>
<We'll see about that,> replied the Visser.
<In three days you'll be dead,> I said coldly.
<Oh, really?>
Visser Three began to morph. Obviously, the drug had worn off by now. There was a small crack in the wall. Small enough for something tiny to go through. Small enough for a flea to go through.
A flea is a tiny insect found on Earth. The Yeerk must have acquired one that was in the room.
When he finished morphing, he got out of the room and demorphed. Then Visser Three left the ship and went back to the mall. He went to the Mcdonald's and opened the "Employees Only" door.
Standing right inside the door was Alloran.
<Aliri?> he asked cautiously.
<So,> said the Visser. <My old host has returned.>
Alloran stared at the Visser with one of his stalk eyes. He was still for a moment. Then most of the warriors and princes from the Dome ship stepped out of the shadows.
<You left the ship without noticing how empty it was? Really, Visser Three, you are more foolish than I thought,> Alloran said sarcastically.
Now the Visser was obviously afraid.
<We have you surrounded, Visser Three. We'll let you live->
<Good,> interrupted the Yeerk Visser.
<-if you free Prince Aliri-,> continued Alloran.
Visser Three snorted.
<-and stop the Yeerk invasion of Earth. Forever.>
Was he serious?
~Chapter Eight~
<Fine, I will,> said Visser Three.
Suddenly I realised the truth about the Visser. He was powerful and clever, but when it came to his own life, he was willing to lose everything else.
Of course. He was tricking Alloran. Alloran had said to free me and stop the invasion, but he hadn't said when. Visser Three would probably do as Alloran said eventually. If ever. Alloran realised, too, though, and said, <Do it now.>
The Visser muttered something I won't repeat. But then he told everyone in the Yeerk pool the invasion was over. They were to leave Earth and never come back.
Then Visser Three very reluctantly left my head and dropped into a box Captain Saridor was holding. I was free!
I looked at Alloran. He had kept his word. Now we were both free. I had an idea.
I told Alloran something in private thought-speech. He answered me.
We had plans for the Visser.
We had plans for the Yeerks.
I would have grinned if I were in human morph. But now was a time to celebrate. The humans had given us cinnamon buns, and the ship had returned to Earth.
What a party.
~Epilogue~
Three years laterˇK
The Yeerks had been forced back to their planet. The humans had created a virus that would make them forget Andalite technology. Now they were living just as they were before Seerow.
Alloran and I had been married. We had a child, Facori-Semitur-Nomran. We lived on the homeworld in a scoop of our own.
Just as Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthil predicted, many Andalites have been visiting Earth for a taste of the marvellous cinnamon buns. Earth is extremely popular with Andalites now.
Alloran and I still laugh about what we did to Visser Three. I wonder if he's still there, in a bio-stasis chamber deep undergroundˇK
