The Envy Chapter 1 My name is Becka. I have long beautiful blonde hair, blue eyes, and I am very tall and popular. I・m also in the UltraMorphs, a group of kids, and a Andalite that battle an alien race for the freedom of Earth. You and I know these aliens as the Yeerks. My boyfriend Zac is the leader of the group. Brittany and Brian are the Ellimist children that now train with immense powers. Justin is the wise cracking smart ass of the group. Austin is the brain, and half Andalite that is the twin brother of Sara who we sometimes forget is half Andalite instead of whole. One day I was poking around in Brittany・s room, and found her power cube that gives her new powers. Now I have powers of a Powerling too. I will train to achieve either, or both of my goals, destroy the Yeerks or beat Brittany in a one-on-one competition. My envy of her grows everyday as she becomes stronger and more recognized by other people. It was a day at the park with my girl friends. We often go there to gossip and hang out. "Have you heard about Lily??" my friend Libby asked us as she was drinking her caned coke with a straw. "You mean limy light-headed Lily??" I asked eating a package of gummy bears. "Yeah, that・s her. I heard she was getting her braces took off and contacts instead of glasses. I heard that her mom is marring a rich guy, and that she・ll get to live in a big house." Libby said. "Oh my gawd. She is SO lucky. Who is her mom marrying??" I asked. "I don・t know exactly, but I do know he・s loaded." Libby said. "Hey, there are some guys over there checking out Becka." Genny said from her perch onto of a pick-nick table. "Hey, speaking of guys, are you still going out with that guy Zac??" Libby asked. Zac, the guy of my dreams. I loved him more than anything I・d ever experienced. I never told him or anyone that, but he really did complete my life. If I had to chose between anything in the world, and Zac, I・d choose Zac. I might act like he・s just another guy sometimes, but I・m not really the type that will express their feelings. These thoughts ran through my mind a few seconds before I answered. "Yeah, we・re still going out." I said. "Okay, I heard that you and him leave on dates, and don・t come back till real late at night. So tell me, are you still, you know, a virgin??" Genny asked behind her sun-glasses. "Genny!! Like- how could you ask that?? Yeah I might stay out pretty late, but I・m still only 14. I don・t think I・m going to make that kind of an impact on my life till I・m married." I said sort of embarrassed. "Yeah Genny, just because you happen to do it, doesn・t mean that other people have to." Libby said. "Oh like-shut up you two." Genny mussed. "Hey, those guys over there are coming over. Look alive girls." Libby said putting her hair behind her shoulders and adjusting her dark sun glasses. There were three, very hot guys with cool clothing tastes. Still, none really made me think any less of Zac. The guys walked over in their long strides, and then passed us up all together! They went to another pick-nick table behind us. All of three of us turned around simultaneously. They were heading for Brittany and her nearby friends. The three girls were reading books and listening to some kind of music on head phones. "Hey, what are you girls up to??" one of the boys said. All three girls looked at one another. Then stopped their music. The boys thought they had their full attention, but then all three girls stood up and walked away with all of their things. The boys were confused. "Did you see that! They completely passed up a hot opportunity for cute guys central. How much out of it can you be??" Libby said before picking up a magazine and going back to reading. It・s strange, but I almost wanted to stick up for Brittany. I admired her courage to just walk away.
Latter that day we had a meeting at Cassie・s barn. "Have you found the disk??" Zac asked. "I saw it in Tom・s room. He・s going to be going to the Yeerk Pool in two days. We have to get the disk by then. But Tom is keeping a close watch on it. It will be hard to get it from him." Jake said sitting down on a bale of hay. "Why don・t we just go in to his bedroom, some of us pin him down, and the rest of us get the disk. Then, we wait till his Yeerk dies of starvation before making him an Animal morpher." Austin said. "Don・t you think that Visser Three would notice??" Brian said. "But, after we give him the power, we could act like we were killing him at the Yeerk Pool. Or, Jake could morph Tom, then we go in and tear him up some. Jake de-morphs and then gets out of there. It・s simple because everyone will think that he died." Rachel said. "That sounds like a good idea." Brittany said with a wide grin. "I・m up for it." Zac said. "I can go for it." Tobias said. "If Prince Jake wants to, then I will." Ax said. "I am included also." Sara said. "This is insane!!" Justin said. "I vote no." Marco said. "I think it will be a good idea." Cassie said. "I・m game." Brian said. "We could even do the same with Melissa, but let Cassie morph Melissa." Rachel said. "How could we hold to controllers in here without Cassie・s dad noticing. Sure, you all held Jake in here, Brittany, and Justin, but those times it was only one person. We need another place." Zac said. "We could take them to Austin・s barn and let Sara and Ax watch them." I said. "It・s a plan. Get everything we need Rachel and Brittany. We・re getting Tom today, then we・ll take him to Austin・s barn. How will we get Melissa though? Her dad is a Controller." Jake said. "Rachel and I could call her to come over to my house, then we grab her and take her back to Austin・s." I said. "That sounds good." Austin nodded in approvement.
It was going to take all of us except Ax and Sara to take down Tom. We went to Jake・s house. "Jake, how come you have so many friends over??" His mom asked. "We・re going to put on a play in front of Tom. It involves very dramatic parts, so don・t worry if you should hear muffled cries." Brittany said. "Okay, just take the back door when you decide to leave." his mom said. "Okay, thanks Jake・s mom." Justin said running up the stairs behind all of us. We knocked on Tom・s door. "Yeah?? I・m busy." Tom said from inside his bedroom. "Tom, I・m going to be coming in so you better get ready." Jake said. That was the symbol that ment for us to get ready to invade the room. "Go away and leave me alone." Tom said raising his voice some. "Can・t do that bro." Jake said getting ready to open the door. "On my word." he whispered to the rest of us. "What?" Tom asked. "NOW!!" Jake said as he opened the door. "What is this!!" Tom said standing up as we began to tackle him. All the boys were going to hold him down and search him for the disk. Us girls were going to find the disk if it was in the room in another place. "Here it is." Cassie said. "Andalite Bandits!!" Tom said. "Controller. Nice to meet you." Marco said in a musing voice. "Every boy morph bird after Brittany has turned him into liquid." Zac said. "What!!! You can・t do this!! I・ll have your heads for this if you don・t let me go." Tom said struggling. Brittany then turned him into liquid, following by me putting him into a Tupperware seal tight plastic container. Then the container・s string that was on it was place around Zac・s neck once he was in bird morph. <All girls make arraignment with Melissa over the phone to meet you at Austin・s barn. All males, move out." Jake said hopping out the window in bird morph with the other males in bird morph behind him. "Hello?? Is Melissa Chapman there??" Rachel said over the phone in Tom・s room. "Yes, just a minuet." Chapman said before calling his daughter to the phone. "Hello??" Melissa said on the other end. "Hi, it・s Becka. There is a small invitation only party at Austin・s barn. It just wouldn・t be any fun if you weren・t there. Oh, and I might just take you up on that offer to join the Sharing." I said to Melissa. "Sure. I・ll see you there. Bye." The controller said through Melissa・s mouth. I hung up the phone and us girls walked down stairs and out the back door. Jake・s mom never even saw us or asked us anything.
We ran over to Austin・s barn as fast as we could. We waited at the road until we saw Melissa drive up on her bike. "Hey, how are all of you doing? I don・t hear any music." Melissa said walking her bike up to us. "It・s just about to start. You can bring your bike and park it against the barn." Brittany said leading us all across the grassy field to the barn. "So, you are thinking about joining the Sharing??" Melissa asked. I had just been waiting for her controller to bring the subject up. "Yeah, it just seams to boring sitting around all day. You sure there is enough room for all us girls??" Cassie lied. "Sure there is." Melissa said parking her bike against the barn. "You go in first." Rachel said opening the door. Melissa walked in a few steps and saw Tom tied up and gagged at the other end of the barn. All the boys and two Andalites stood close by. "Andalite Bandits!!" Melissa said spinning around, her hair falling over her shoulders. "Yep, and you・re a controller. Or at least for now you are. We want our friend back, and we are going to starve you of life giving kandronna rays until you shrivel up and die." Rachel said. Melissa tried to push through us, but Brittany held her in her place. A couple of the boys came over and sat Melissa in a chair. Then they tied her up and gagged her. She tried to break lose. She tried to yell, but we had planned everything all to well. "Were is Austin??" Brittany asked looking around. "He went to go get his laptop so you could study the disk in here." Zac said. <These controllers will soon be free of the Yeerks, and live again.> Ax said in Andalite form. Cassie then took this time to aquire Melissa・s DNA as Jake acquired Tom・s. "We・ll make an attack later tonight. Ax and Sara will have to stay here. We・ll get James and Erek to come by and help with everything here." Jake said. Austin soon brought in the laptop and Brittany began to study the disk. "The disk is really to small for the laptop. I don・t think I can study it." Brittany said. Ax took the disk and began to examine it. "What is it for Ax??" Tobias asked. <It is something that is the Permilite Crystal of the Andalites. Only Andalite Worrier Princes are given it. That would mean that they are somewhat in number.> Ax said. "But what does it do??" Marco asked. <It is a disk that can access any known computer, to call any planet in the Universe, and the disk in which every Yeerk file is saved.> Sara said. "This could be the thing that we win the war with!! This is our freedom!!" Brittany said. "Do you know how to activate it??" Jake asked. <Yes, some of my tools that I still have with me will activate it. I must also require the use of this primitive computer hardware as well as the assistance from Erek and James.> Sara said. "You can work on it while we are at the Yeerk Pool. We have a mission to perform." Zac said. Chapter 5 We entered the Yeerk Pool with the entrance that Brian had been using for some time. Jake morphed Tom and Cassie morphed Melissa. Jake and Cassie then took two Dracon Beams we had brought along. This would make things look more affective. Everyone then morphed battle morph. Brittany and Brian powered up. I did say I was a Powerling, but not yet strong enough to fight in a battle against the Yeerks with only my powers. We went a little farther underground and Jake and Cassie started the plan. "Andalite Bandits!! Andalite Bandits!!" Jake-who-appeared-as-Tom said. "We have the Andalite Bandits!!" Cassie-who-appeared-as-Melissa said. Hork Bajir controllers appeared. "You need help??" one of the Hork Bajir asked Jake. "No, we can take them ourselves. Don・t interfere." Cassie-Melissa said. Then our morphed forces attacked the fake Melissa and Tom. Blood gushed and screams began to rise. Animal noises and lasers of power were flying and sounding. The Hork Bajir backed away fast. Scared. We then carried Jake and Cassie out of the Yeerk Pool. Morphing in a trash dumpster. "That was insane!!" Marco and Justin said. "But it was fun." Rachel said. "And now they all think that Tom and Melissa are dead." Jake said. We went back to the barn were Sara and Ax were working hard on constructing a device to activate the disk. "When it becomes operational, who will we contact?? And will they even show up??" Jake asked. <The Andalites, and the Cyberterrians. The Cyberterrians are in debt to the Andalites and were second strongest race when the Ellimists lived. At lease in that galaxy.> Ax said. <The Cyberterrians have computer systems that are higher advanced than the Andalites, and close to how high the Permilite had before their downfall.> Sara said. "Yeah, but do they fight??" I asked. <Yes in fact. Their star fleet is higher developed than the Andalites, and artillery masters some of the best,> Ax said in what sounded like disgust. "I think the Andalites are jealous." I said. "Not anymore than you are of me it seems." Brittany said. "Me envy you!!? What ever met you think of such an impossible thing!!" I lied to Brittany in a believable way. She looked at me with a cold hard look. "So, the Cyberterrians. What do they look like???" Austin asked. <Much like humans. Their brains are more sophisticated and their organ system is amuned to much more diseases of many kinds. It seems that the women do all the fighting in the race, unlike many races in the Universe.> Ax said. "Cool, Amazon women. That fits in with Rachel and Brittany・s standards." Justin said laying back on the floor. "So when will it be ready??" I asked. <Three days.> Sara said. "Hey, I have a good question. How are we going to feed Tom and Melissa while they are tied up??" Marco asked. "I have some freeze dried space food rations in my room. We could feed them that. Although, I will not on any condition give them my Ice Cream." Austin said.
I slept very well that night. The next day I returned to Austin・s barn to see how our two Controllers were doing. Their gags had been taken out of their mouths. "Becka, we・ve been friends for so long. Do Me a favor and get me out of here." Melissa・s controller said. "We have been friends, but I won・t get you out till your Yeerk dies." I said to her.
"You okay??" Zac asked me placing a hand on my shoulder. I looked up into his sympathetic eyes. His eyes were so peaceful and happy long ago, but his eyes have changed completely. The hole feeling of their happiness and joy was gone. That is the scar war leaves with you I guess. Some recover, some break down completely. I knew that I had to help Zac get through it. That is why I was with the UltraMorphs. "Yes, I・m fine." I assured him after a moment・s pause. "They・ll be fine. I just have to explain it to Jake." Zac said looking at Jake. Jake had really been through a lot. Now he was just sitting in a corner, waiting for the time that he could have his brother with him again. And once fight with him, and not against him. <Prince Jake?? We are having problems.> Ax called down from the hay loft where Sara, Austin, Brian, Brittany, and he were working on the disk device. "What・s wrong Ax??" Jake said standing up <All of the parts we need are not located at a average Earth store.> Tobias said from the rafters. "Where would they be located??" I asked. <The Yeerk Pool> Sara said. "How would the Yeerk Pool have the parts??" Jake asked. "Because the parts are found in everyday Yeerk Tech. These two Andalites can make use of most things, but there is just nothing that they can use to make this, that average people can get their hands on." Austin said. "Maybe, we Chee could get hold of some of the things." Erek said. "Do what-ever you can to get it finished. Just hurry." Zac said for Jake. Jake and Zac used to hate each other, I guess because both of them are leaders and each wanted to use his own idea. Now they have become really good friends. "Jake, Zac?? There is something we need to talk about though." James said. "Yeah??" Zac said with Jake behind him. "This disk, well, to make it simple," Erek started. "Just spit it out!" Marco said. "The disk will be the power source that will power the communicator to the Andalite home world and Cyberterrian Main Frame Communication Port. Enough power that Earth Satellites might not pick it up." Erek said. "That・s good." Jake said. "No, they defiantly will pick it up if their satellite radars are even 100 sectors away from our scanning distance. The Yeerks, will also find it if the US government does. And the Yeerks could possibly get to it faster. We would be taking a great risk turning it on, if not for that reason." James said. "What is the other reason." Cassie asked. "If the device is put together properly and does make contact with the Cyberterrians, then there will be a great cosmic force that will be initiating at the device. The person(s) that are closes to the device could open a portal to other realms and dimensions. As long as the port is open. That could very dangerous to Earth, and it may cause even more trouble than we・re having with the Yeerks. Luckily, if that should happen, a energy container will surround the device for up 50 feet. The person that uses the device could suffer severe damage trying to keep other life forms our while contacting the beinging we need." Erek said. "How long would the port have to be open??" Rachel asked. "Five minuets at the most. But, time in this Universe could bend transporting the person(s) using the device to a Relm known as the Nexus." James said. "We could put off the use of the device for a short time I suppose. But we would need to use it if an Emergency happened." Brittany said. "We will put off the use of it for a month if possible. After that, we will use it if the Yeerks are not retreating. We will have to work hard to hold them back. Everyone will have to be extra careful." Jake said. <Prince Jake, I request permission to continue work and research on the disk if possible.> Ax said. "Feel free to, but don・t call me Prince." Jake said. "Can we stop referring to the disk as "the disk" and say it・s real name??" I said. <Yes. The correct name of the disk is the disk.> Ax said. "Ummmm, what language was that??" Justin asked. <Old Andalite.> Sara said. "What does it mean??" Cassie asked. <The Evelon disk.> Ax said.
The next day I woke up at noon. My alarm clock hadn・t gone off at the time I wanted it to. I took a shower that lasted a hour, and dressed in casual summer wear. Then I sprayed on some body mist and hair spray. I put on my giant clod hoppers, and my flowered hat. I walked out the door and decided if I should walk or ride my bike. I decided I would take a cab. Of course the cab driver completely and totally ripped me off and said that I had to pay this way overly harsh fee. "I・m sorry, but I like- refuse to pay that." I said outside the cab looking in through the cab window. "Pay it or I・ll get your parents to. I know where you live." the cab driver said, "Gawd, like- where is Christopher Lloyd when you need him." I said to myself. "Here, I・ll pay it." Brittany said walking her bike up to the cab and handing him the money. "Thanks for wasting my time." The cab driver said dryly driving away. "Like- thanks." I said to Brittany. "No prob. Come on, we have a meeting. How come you・re so late??" Brittany said in a way that made me forget our hate between each other. "My alarm didn・t go off." I said remembering how often she is late for things. We walked the next half of the way up to the barn in silence. "Is that a new bike??" I asked her. "No, it・s Melissa・s. I was taking it home to fix the chain on it Yesterday. Then today I rode it over here to give it back to her when her Yeerk is out." Brittany said. She parked the bike and opened the large barn door and held it open for me to go through. I walked in to see Tom and Melissa in even worse shape. The sweat from their foreheads was pounding down. Their faces were flushed and their wrists were scrubbed with rope burn from trying to get free. Melissa・s hair was un-brushed and strewn everywhere on her head. I walked in front of her and looked into her eyes with my mouth hanging patriotically open. Her face was full of rage, and her eyes were almost red with furry. She looked into my eyes as if to say ．You are nothing to me, if I get out, you・ll go first.・ "Melissa, you have to fight it. The Yeerk will not control you for much longer. Just pull through. You need to pull through, for everyone." Rachel said beside Melissa. "You won・t be able to hold me. My host・s father will find I・m un-infested and will infest me again. The new Yeerk will find out everything I know about you. If I should go, it・s just a matter of time before you do." the Yeerk said through Melissa・s mouth. "My name is Clovis 78.4. Remember is well, my legacy will travel as the first know Yeerk to invest the girl that reveals the Andalite Bandits." the Yeerk-Melissa said. "Hey, something is wrong with Tom. He looks like he・s going to do a Technicolor yawn." Marco said. <What??> Tobias asked from the rafters. "He・s going to Cascade." Justin said. "Tango with the Toilet." Marco said. "Spew his guts." Justin said. "Blow chunks." Marco said. "Toss his cookies, Ralph." Justin said. "Hurl, puke." Marco said. "Stop saying all the references for vomiting!!!" Cassie said. "Ahh, that・s a good one to." Austin said. "Maybe his Yeerk is about to come out." I said. "Could be, that the Yeerk is getting sick, so Tom is getting sick." Brittany said. <I think that is the reason.> Ax said walking up to look at Tom・s face. <We might have to find a way to take the Yeerk out.> Sara said. "What?!" Jake said springing to his feet <The Yeerk is dying and it refuses to give up. It does have control of your brother still. It has three choices right now, get out of the host alive, die without a fight, or take your brother with him.> Sara said. "Can it be stopped??" Zac asked. "I・ll try." Marco said walking up to Jake and putting his mouth up to Tom・s ear. "GET OUT OF HIS EAR YOU COWARDLY YEERK!!! COME ON, LET・S FIGHT, HUMAN ON YEERK." Marco yelled. Tom・s controller made him spit on Marco. "Well, I tried." Marco said wiping the gross stuff from his face. "You tried to tear up his ear drum." Cassie said. "Marco, yes there is a Yeerk in his head, but that is also Tom. We can・t help it if there is a cowardly little piece of space trash in his ear." Rachel mussed. Unless you are a alien, you know what Rachel was doing. She was using reverse cycology on the Yeerk. If she couldn・t beat the heck out of it, why not cut it down to size with words. "I will kill your friend." the Yeerk said. Everyone that could turned pale. "No you won・t!!" Jake yelled pulling out a Dracon Beam and pointing it at Tom. "Jake don・t!!" Marco said. "That is insane man!!" Justin said. "Get out of my brother or you・ll both die!!!" Jake said to the Yeerk not lowering the gun. "Jake no, he is my family too." Rachel said. "Jake, calm down honey." Cassie said as some looked at her like ．You do like him don・t you?・ "Jake, be smart." Brittany said. "You don・t know what you・re doing." I said. <Jake, don・t!!> Tobias said ruffling his feathers. "Jake, don・t do this to yourself." Zac said. <It is unwise!!> Sara and Ax said at the same time, then looked at one another in unity. "No!" Brian, Erek, and James said. The Yeerk was scarred. Tom closed his eyes and his head fell to his chest. I knew the Yeerk was not going to budge. Chapter 8 Hey, I happen to know a lot it・s just I・m not a good fortune teller!! The next few seconds we saw the Yeerk leave Tom completely and fall to the floor. Jake re-aimed his gun at the Yeerk. "Wait!!" Erek said walking in. "This is the perfect Yeerk to wire James with." Erek said. "Yeah, I・ve wanted a Yeerk in my head like Erek for awhile. I・m afraid that the Yeerks might find me if I don・t have one installed soon." James said picking up the Yeerk. "I find it best to use the Yeerk when it is most powerless. That way it will corporate more. Unless you really want to destroy it...." Erek said. "Yes I would." Jake said taking the Yeerk from James and setting it back on the floor. "Okay let・s do the scene over, this time without The interruption from the Chee." Marco said like a director. "Okay, Jake. You had the Dracon Beam raised and a look of anger on your face." Justin said raising Jake・s armed hands back up. "Guys, this is stupid. We don・t have time for it." Jake said. "Your right. Too gruesome. Bring in the stunt double!!" Marco called. Another boy walked up and took the Dracon from Jake. Jake turned him around and saw his own face. "Hi, it・s me Austin. The stunt double." Austin said in Jake morph. "Give me that I・ll do it myself Mr. DeVille." Jake said taking the Dracon. "Roll ．em!" Marco said. "You have tortured my Brother for long enough. I will rid your kind off this planet. Starting now when I kill you. The secret of the Animorphs, UltraMorphs, Chee, All Andalite Bandits, will remain secret." Jake said before firing the silent shot at the Yeerk. Chapter 9 Three hours later Melissa・s Yeerk died and crawled out on the floor. Rachel crushed it with her shoe. Then said that she would have the shoe made into a trophy because it was the first Yeerk she had ever killed while not in a morph. "We will give you a choice. You can have the power to morph, to fight the Yeerks. You can fight for the freedom of Earth and protect our secret. We will protect you, welcome you, share our secrets with you. You must agree to do the same and tell us you secrets, promise your loyalty. We・ve made the first step by freeing you, now you can make the second." Jake said to Melissa and Tom. "I don・t guess we have a choice. I・m in." Tom said. "Rachel and Becka can do it. I can too." Melissa said. "How are we going to protect Melissa from Chapman. Melissa could stay in one morph, and stay that way." Cassie said. "That is a problem." I said. <I suggest she morph something that we can protect. She may have the power to morph again afterwards.> Ax said. <You can do that!!> Tobias said. <I wasn・t aware you could.> Sara said. <I wasn・t aware you could without the Escifeld device.> Ax said. "Ax, we have two of them." Zac said. <Then I want the power to morph as a human. I can・t stay hawk forever. I need a life. I could live with Erek and they could hide me there. I could go to Erek・s school and be a normal kid again.> Tobias said. "Ax, you are supposed to tell us these things." Rachel said. "Could I get into a morph where someone could use me as a pet?? Or can I live with Erek too?" Melissa asked. "There are other Chee that you could live with, but we could do that." Brittany said. "Here is the device." Austin said pulling out Sara・s Escifeld device. "Tobias?? Morph hunman and stay it for two hours. Then we・ll give you the power to morph again." Jake said. "Melissa? Tom?? You know what things you・ll have to go through. You know it does sometimes involve going back to the Yeerk pool. Melissa, you know that you won・t be able to see your father for a long time." I said. Melissa・s eyes clouded with tears. "I know." "Yeah, I know." Tom said in the casual way that Jake uses. "Never say the word ．Yeerk・ in public, you can・t aquire a morph while in a morph, you can・t morph from one morph to another without going to you normal form, you can・t be too careful about talking on phones, you must watch out for Yeerks, you must never go on a mission without permission for the team leader or the rest of the group, most missions depend on a 66% vote, and you can never tell anyone who we are or where we live." Zac said. <Device activate.> Sara said to the blue box. <Place your hands on the box.> She said to Tom and Melissa. <Concentrate on the box・s glow and clear your mind of everything else.> she said. The box began to glow more and then the two had the power. <Move your hands.> Sara said confirming the completion. "Now, any animal you touch, you can aquire it・s DNA. Focus on the morph, and you make the change. Touch, aquire, concentrate. In that order." Cassie said. "Yes, I・ll have two cheeseburgers, large fries, a Diet Coke," Marco began. "Justin, what do you want??" "Ha ha ha." Brian said dryly.
Two hours and a headache-caused-by-Marco-and-Justin later, Tobias had become a human nothlit. Sara gave him the power to morph, and every morph he had acquired he regained. Rachel and Tobias smiled and looked into each other・s eyes. I looked at Brittany who seemed to be pained. I thought that she and Brian were sort of boy and girl, but Brittany seemed to have a love in another place. We all spilt up to go home. I walked with Brittany. "Why did we always--- you know--- fight so much??" I asked. "I don・t know, maybe because of a small argument and our anger overflowing from that argument causing us to think the other was pure evil." Brittany said. "Okay-----" I started. "How are you and Zac doing?? I would say that you two are the best couple out of all of us. You two are a cute couple too." Brittany said smiling and scrunching up her nose when she usually means to play with someone or just get nosey. "Fine I suppose. But what is this that I see between you and Tobias??" I said trying to also act nosey. Brittany stopped walking and then looked at me with a shocked scared impression. "You know?" she said her voice almost to a whisper. "I didn・t have an idea until I saw you today. Why??" I said in a whisper trying to play along. "You weren・t supposed to see that." Brittany said walking on net letting me see her face. "What・s wrong?? Why don・t you just tell him??" I said. "Tell him that he should break up his long, loving, trusting relationship with one of my best friends just because I have some silly crush on him??" Brittany said now turning around and looking at me with her eyes full of tears. "Tell him, that as much as I try not to, and as much as I tell myself I don・t like him, that I still feel love for him?? Sure I like Brian, but somehow, somehow..... I still love Tobias." Brittany said still looking at me hard and scared. I broke my gaze with her and now looked down at the ground while I tucked my hair behind my ear. "Brittany, I didn・t know. How can you possibly like-- hold back everything so well??" I said still looking at the ground. "I don・t want to get people・s pity. I want Tobias to love me, because he feels it in his heart. I will not try to create something that isn・t there, while destroying something that can・t be forgotten or pushed away." Brittany said. "His love for Rachel is nothing near to what anyone could feel for me. Not on this planet." Brittany said before running off for her house. "Brittany wait!!" I yelled not wanting to chase after her, but not wanting to stay either. I knew that she had just en-trusted me with a secret she had told no other person. And as a girl, it was my job and my reputation to keep that secret. When I went up to my room I got a call from Brittany asking me to come over. I did, and she was in worse condition than when she left. "Brittany, tell him. You have to." I said to her once I was in her room and the door closed. "No, I can・t. I can・t let anyone tell him. It・s too hard to face it. I know he doesn・t love me, he is a good friend. I・ve betrayed his friendship." Brittany said sitting down and getting a tissue. "What do you mean??" I asked very confused with what she was saying. "I・ve dated one of my good friends before. You just can・t date a boy who is your friend. If something went wrong in the relationship, then the friendship goes wrong. You can never look at the other in the same, trusting, friendship light. Tobias is the only time this has happened since then." Brittany said. "How can you hold it all back??" I asked. "I do things to get my mind off it. I fight the Yeerks. You would think that hate conquers love, but it・s not possible. I fight the Yeerks, train with my powers, go out to eat as much junk food as I can afford, watch birds. All of it is linked to Tobias some how. I fight the Yeerks beside him, he is there to help me train, he sometimes goes with Rachel and I to eat, and I watch birds because----" she stared but got choked by her words. "Because??" I said. "Because I love a boy that until today was a hawk." She said trying to laugh it off. The two of us talked about it for awhile. Then we played Monopoly to get her mind off things. Just then I deiced to bring the subject up again. "Tell him." I said after passing Go. "No," she said looking up with a stern look of stubbornness. Just then a figure flew through the window and landed on Brittany・s book shelf. <Tell who what??> Tobias said. "Tell Jake that today he had something in his teeth." I quickly lied. <Okay----> he started. "How long have you been out there?? Anyway, aren・t you supposed to be human now??" Brittany said as if nothing had happened in our conversation. "Well, I figured people would be wondering if a boy climbed in you window. And I just got here anyway. What・s with all the questions??" Tobias said once he was human again. "We just got done playing 20 questions and it・s still stuck in my mind to figure out any possible angle of anything." Brittany lied quickly. Tobias left later in his bird morph. He was going to live in the spare bedroom in Erek・s house. Melissa was going to live in another house of a Chee a few blocks away. Both were going to go to another school close by. Brittany and I didn・t say anymore about Tobias that week. She and I had already made the first step of being friends, trust and happiness with hanging around the other. I wonder why we never tried it sooner. Envy makes me green. |
