Religion

Viewer please note:

In collecting together these links to other people's YouTube videos, I am not attempting to make any serious comment on religion.   My own belief, for what it is worth, is that religion is a private matter and, unless it predisposes one towards good works for the benefit of mankind, animal kind, vegetable kind or the planet as a whole, it should remain a private matter.   I think religious debates are fine, provided they are enjoyable.   Advancing your religious beliefs as an excuse to burn someone, torture someone or in any other way interfere with people's rights to live their own lives in their own way, is, most definately, not OK!

The videos I have linked to here are included, either because I find them vaguely interesting and intriguing, or, in the case of the first of the videos, because I find them witty and amusing.

It is quite possible, when you are watching the films about archeological evidence for Noah's Ark and Sodom and Gomorrah, you are going to say: "This is nonsense!   The whole thing has been fabricated."   However, I don't care.   I have not the time, the energy or the inclination to find out whether these videos are true stories or cynical fabrications.   They are intriguing.   That, to me, is a good enough reason to include links to them.   You can perform your own research to find out whether they are true or not.   If you have any strong feelings, either way, please let me know.

Please note: Although the following four links were working when I first set them up, I attempted to use them on Wednesday 1 April 2009 and found that they were no longer working.   I will not remove this section just yet.   It is entirely possible that the problem was a temporary one.   However, you have been warned. Jazz, Cabaret, Folk Song and 1950s pop of the "Perry Como" variety

Dear visitor

You might consider some of the songs in this section to be unbelievably slushy and sentimental.   You might even be right.   But here's the thing.   I don't care.   Those songs are the songs of my early childhood.   I choose to find a place for them here.   I shall do so.

    Introduction

Laurie Anderson first came on to the scene with her song O Superman.   She has the rare distinction of being the first ever artist in residence at Nasa.   Of course, artists often prove to be difficult people to some.   There whole raison d'etre is to question the Status Quo, to search out and report evil and corruption, to ensure that the evil, the lazy and the inept do not get an easy ride.   Artists can upset people.   The artist Laurie Anderson some how managed to upset her sponsers at Nasa,   As she put it herself in her stage show, shortly after telling the audience the story of being given the honour of being the first artist in residence in NASA, "I discovered that I was going to be the last artist in residence at NASA."

Laurie Anderson is married to Lou Reed.

    Return To:  Table of Contents

Notes on the Jefferson Airplane Song: White Rabbit

This is an interesting song.   I have in my CD collection a double album of Jefferson Airplane's songs.   The album is called simply, Dejavu Retro Gold Collection.   With a name like that, I can only conclude that the CD was put together by a record company, rather than the group themselves.   If that is the case, then this CD must represent the very best music Jefferson Aitplane ever produced.   That said, however, there is nothing at all remarkable or memorable on the entire CD.   Nothing, that is, apart from White Rabbit.   The music of White Rabbit haunts one.   So do the lyrics.   At first they seem rather conceited and almost trite.   Yet there they remain, gnawing at one's brain, demanding to be considered.   In the end, finding myself particularly intrigued by the line, "Remember, what the doormouse said, "Feed your head.   Feed your head"" I Googled: 'Doormouse + "feed your head"'.   When I did so, I discovered that the online encyclopeida, Wikipedia, has an entire entry devoted to the song White Rabbit.

It would appear that both White Rabbit and Somebody to Love, were written by Grace Slick and were taken with her, to Jefferson Airplane, when she moved to that group from her earlier group The Great Society.   This may well account for the superiority of these songs over the other, earlier Jefferson Airplane songs.   In other words, they were written by a better, more competant musician with a more interesting and intelligent cultural background.

    The Great Society

Before Grace Slick joined Jefferson Airplane she was a member of another group known as The Great Society.   Two of the most famous songs she sung with Jefferson Airplane, were written, by Grace, while she was with The Great Society.   Those two songs were White Rabbit and Somebody to Love.   Here we have videos of The Great Society versions of these songs.

    English Literature

Hello everybody peeps.   This section is entitled English Literature.   By English Literature I mean literature written in English.   Therefore, I am including American Literature in this section.   You may wish to disagree with me on this.   You may feel that English Literature only applies to Literature written in England.   Well, you're entitled to your opinion.   However, this is my website, not yours.   When I use a word, in keeping with Lewis Carol's philosophy, that word means precisely what I want it to mean.   Right here, right now, that means English and American Literature.   "Why is that?" I hear you ask.   Well, like a meercat, it's simple.   The first book I want to include a reading from is Hermann Melville's Moby Dick.   He was an American author, so therefore American Authors will be included in this section.      QED.

Doubtless, you think of the Beatles as musicians, rather than comedians.   Well, they were indeed, very fine musicians, as indeed, you can see for yourself if you view some of these YouTube videos of their work as musician.   However, it would seem that they also had something of a talent for comedy, as you can see if you view the above videos.

    At Last, The 1948 Show

This TV series slightly pre-dated Monty Python's Flying Circus.   Many of the people involved with At Last The 1948 Show went on to join Monty Python's Flying Circus.   This is also the TV show which featured, "The Lovely Aimi MacDonald", who, in addition to taking charge of many ofthe links between sketches, also presented those glorious appeals for donations to "The make the lovely Aimi MacDonald a Rich Lady Fund".

The author of these pages can verify that the lovely Aimi MacDonald was still performing, as a Cabaret Artist, and still looking as lovely as ever, as late as October 2002, when he saw her in Cabaret at Lauderdale House, Highgate, London N6.

Marianne Faithful - The Baroness Von Sacher-Masoch

During a recent interview on the Andrew Marr show, Mr. Marr mentioned the fact that Marianne Faithful recently inherited the title of Baroness Von Sacher-Masoch.

The Baroness is distantly related to another famous member of the Sacher-Masoch family, Leopold Sacher-Masoch, the author of the novel, Venus in Furs.   Leopold Sacher-Masoch is the man after which the sexual preference known as masochism was named.   Masochism is the desire to augment one's sexual pleasure through pain and humiliation.
