The real Fawlty Towers

The Hotel Gleneagles Torquay. The full name and address is: The Best Western Gleneagles, Asheldon Road, Wellswood, Torquay, TQ1 2QS. The telephone number is: +44 (0) 1803 293 637. The web address for the hotel is: http://www.hotel-gleneagles.com/.

This is the hotel that inspired John Cleese to create the TV series Fawlty Towers. Apparently the Monty Python team stayed there once during a film shoot. I do not know any of the details of their stay. The hotel is now under new management, the real life Basil Fawlty (not his real name, obviously) having sadly passed away. If you look at the website you will see a brief acknowledgement to the hotel's famous history. The following text is displayed under the "About" heading: "Overlooking the stunning Lyme Bay, this bijou style hotel has recently been transformed from a place that inspired the BBC hit TV comedy Fawlty Towers into a into a modern boutique hotel typical of a place found in the world's most glamorous must visit cities and resorts." However, this text is part of a rolling display. If you blink, you'll miss it! One might almost think that the new owners were ashamed of their glorious heritage!
