Tatanka Iyotaka. Known to the west as "Sitting Bull" Tatanka Iyotaka was a Sioux leader and medicine man. I like this man. He died more than 60 years before I was born but I like everything I have heard about him. For example: I have heard that once, when asked to sign away part or all of his land to the European invaders, he rubbed his hands in the dirt, held them up to his interlocutor's inspection, and referring to the earth that was now dusting his hands said: "I will not give you even this much land!" This is the man who, together with Tashunca-uitco, "Whipped Custer's arse" at the Battle of Little Big Horn. I have no sympathy with the blue coats. It was Tatanka Iyotaka's homeland he was defending. It was not Custer's. It would have been his own women and children he would have seen slaughtered, had he not seen to it that the blue coats were in no position to slaughter anybody!
The circumstances of Tatanka Iyotaka's death do not reflect well on the colonists. Tatanka Iyotaka was murdered by the reservation police. I have heard conflicting stories about the circumstances of this act, which appear to have been motivated by fear of his power and charisma, even in defeat. More is said on the matter, on the various websites to which I have included links. I would refer you to these for further information.
Tatanka Iyotaka was a very interesting character. He even travelled with Buffallo Bill's Wild West Show.
