GMC Applies for van Velzen Extention

Prof. van VelzenThe following extract was published in the Liverpool Echo on Saturday 5th of June 2004.

"The General Medical Council is to apply for an extension to the suspension order against the pathologist at the centre of the Alder Hey organ scandal.

Professor van Velzen, 54, had been ordered to be banned immediately from any medical work in this country on February 2, 2001 pending final decisions on the allegations of misconduct against him.

The suspension does not amount to a finding or fact but is to protect the public. The ban was due to expire on August 1 but at a recent meeting the GMC decided to apply to the High Court for an extension".

 

PITY II (Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice) is the parents' support group set up in the wake of the organ retention scandal
at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK). It aims to provide self help support and advice to affected families.
